Update: iLounge server is faster?

Update: iLounge has been upgraded with a new server for its database files. The site should now provide faster load times.

As you can imagine, with looming mini iPod rumors and the popularity of iPods this season, the iLounge server is experiencing an increased amount of traffic, thus slowing down website load times considerably. We are actively looking into a solution(s) to remedy the situation and will report any changes here in the near future. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Why not just ditch some of the adds and popups.  They are always loaded first.

With increased server traffic & therefore costs, you can’t just ditch your money-makers.  :-)

Then how would they pay for the bandwidth matey?

Come on, how many of you ever click on any of that crap.  Banner adds are so commonplace that I hardly even see them anymore (of course I “see” them, I just don’t read them).  If I want to buy something I google search for it, I never click on annoying flashing moving spam.

I just stake out what I want, then click through the banner ads before I buy it, support this and other community sites man!

Being that iPodlounge is a very targeted vertical market, all the advertisers on iPodlounge enjoy a steady stream of click thrus (Thanks for clicking). Advertisers, although to some may be a burden, are a neccessity to iPodlounge in order to bring you a quality website… that hopefully loads fast. Without advertsing this site would not exist. iPodder, I’m sorry you feel that way… but the ads have only a minimal affect on the slowing down of this website. It’s the shear number of people visiting the website - high loads on the database.

On one of my companies site servers we also had a problem with mysql and php. We switched to ionCube PHP Accelerator (http://www.php-accelerator.co.uk/ - It’s Free). It cut our server load by 75%.  Just a suggestion of something you might want to look into.

Yep I noticed the slownce, what Server are you guys using? for this kind of site, I recommend switching to a nice Dual Xeon or at least a Dedicated Server for this site only…

If you guys know how to manage your own server go with ev1servers.net they have great prices for Dual Xeons…

“Why not just ditch some of the adds and popups.”

Popups? What popups? I’ve never seen one. I guess that’s the benefit of using Safar and Firebird, eh?

I have clicked on several ads on this site, and I’ve purchased from them, too.

(That should read “Safari”)

iPodlounge is hosted by Rackspace. Royi makes a good point that this site should probably be on a dedicated box. Rackspace doesn’t offer Intel boxes, though - sorry Royi. They offer a variety of AMD boxes.

Atomic Bomb,

Why do you host with Rackspace? ouch

AMD Boxes, another big OUCH.

I offer you to transfer from them to a better company, even if you don’t want EV1Servers, go with ThePlanet if you pay that’s high, or DV2 (we use them) or NAC (PWEBTech) , But something more normal…

Or this is sponsered?

iPodlounge is hosted on a managed, dual AMD 1.53GHz, dedicated server at Rackspace because of its support and reliability. Compared to The Planet, DV2 and PWEBTech our Rackspace server is priced competitively… and yes they matched the price of a cheaper host we had looked at. Also renewing our contract has also offered us considerable savings on our new dedicated database server. I’d rather concentrate on managing the site, writing reviews, content, etc. than managing the servers. There is something to say about customer service and reliability when it comes to hosting a high traffic site.

Well your right :-)

If you don’t want the hassale, your just right, stick with them :)

Actually EV1 and Rackspace are the same thing. Get your facts straight.

EV1 and Rackshack you meant.

Rackspace is an old company.

Also EV1Servers is Rackshack (they changed it into EV1Servers) and EV1 is the ISP.

Get your facts straight mate :)

If it works, why change companies??

Thanks for improving an already great website.  I’ve founds loads of good info from file formats and software to speakers and headphones…. and even a few tidbits about iPod.

I’ve had it bookmarked for quite some time.

Rackspace has a couple of “front ends” for different price points.  Some of it is by acquisition, some of it is just plain marketing.

Good to hear that you got over to a new server (support is good) and best of luck in the new year!
