Christian Hieber of iPodFun.de, a German language iPod website, has learned more about the Bose SoundDock while attending Apple Expo Paris. The SoundDock dock acts as a charging station and features an IR (infrared) port for use with an included wireless remote control for the iPod. Pricing is set at $299 and is expected to ship October 15. Christian had a chance to demo the SoundDock and said, “It looks like a fine, well designed and powerful living room item. The sound is amazing, although there is no subwoofer, it’s okay with the bass. But it’s pricey. It works with 3G/4G iPods and mini iPods.”
While on stage at the Keynote address at Apple Expo Paris, Vice President of WorldWide Marketing, Phil Schiller revealed that Bose has developed a speaker system for iPod named the SoundDock. The photo to the right depicts a large rectangular speaker grill with an integrated dock for the iPod. Details about the new Bose unit have yet to be released.

It’s true that a lot of what you’re paying for with Bose is looks & size, but so what? For some of us with busy lives, much of our music is as background to other activities (driving, dining, working, socialising) and as such, quite frankly, the nuances of outstanding quality vs very good are lost on us. No, Bose will not compete with a stack of deparate components anymore than my 2.7lb laptop will compete with my desktop, but that’s OK. Let’s compare apples & apples , as it were!

Shame on the people who have ruined this potentially useful discussion. This really changes my opinion of iPodlounge which usually has good information and a fantastic site design. I thought maybe the community was comparable, but I was obviously wrong!
I came here to get some unbiased information about this product hopefully from people who own it or at least have tried it, and all I get is 100% biased, childish bickering. “My speakers are bigger and trendier than yours are!!!” Who cares??? Everyone acts like they know what they are talking about, but NO ONE appears to own or even have tried the product which is supposedly being discussed!
“Bose” is meanlingless to me and will remain meaningless. What I want are terrific iPod portable speakers, and I haven’t heard any yet. Price isn’t the issue for me.
If anyone owns or has heard this actual Bose SoundDock, please attempt to be heard among the worthless garbage in this thread. I would love to know how it compares sound-wise to Atec Lansing inMotion which is wonderfully portable and flexible, but at least to my own ears sounds frankly like tinty crap. I’m definitely returning it to Circuit City, and thank God for their 100% no questions asked return policy (whcih BTW Bose promises as well.)

Okay, I’m an idiot. I apologize. There IS good info. on this thread by people who HAVE bought this product, that is if you get beyond the first page!
Sorry, I’m used to forums that list the pages at the bottom in a thread—-didn’t realize “Next?” (with a question mark) actually meant next page. Guess I was so “unenthused” by the first page, I thought “Next?” meant—-well NEXT (as in get me outta here!) I originally just left to site all together…
And sorry for the double post. Looking for my post was what ultimately helped me learn what “Next?” means…LOL

OK, let me start by saying that I ACTUALLY HAVE THIS PRODUCT. My parents got it for me for my birthday/graduation. (I am almost 30, not a 14 year old spoiled brat. Just so you know.)
Anyway, I have to say the sound is really pretty good. I’ve never been a huge fan of the smaller Bose speakers, although the old 201s and 501s sound pretty nice to me. I also live with someone who has Piega of Switzerland speakers hooked up to some NAD gear, which sounds bada**. Having said all that, for something so small, it compares pretty favorably with the top-shelf stuff we have at the house. I don’t get the precise imaging I do from the Piega, but 192kbps mp3 with the Bose unit sounds pretty dang good. It hits a good sweet spot between “car audio upgrade option” and “pants-crappingly good”.
I would like to see a line out or option to add extra speakers to it (like with some of the Tivoli stuff), and I’m not sure that I would’ve bought it with my own money (*cough cough* starving grad student *cough*). Still, if you have the cash and you want something that both looks and sounds fairly good, it’s one way to go.
