myTunes Redux is a program that allows you to download music made available by iTunes. It allows you to search everything on the network at once, live, and works with all versions of iTunes (from 4.1 through 4.6).
This program will most likely only work on Windows XP. No mac version exists and I’m not making one, so stop asking.

Jeremy & schiano: iTunes allows the streaming of music from one computer to another, but that music cannot be downloaded. myTunes allows you to search all music made available for streaming and download it without any loss of quality.

schiano: this has nothing to do with the itunes store, only with music people already have on their computer

No Mac version, it is kinda hard to come out with software made for Apple iTunes and not come out with an Apple Mac OS X version. Give support to the creators.

oh ok, cool… i was, for some reason, under the impression it was something for the itunes store…
thanks for the explanation!

eh: how is writing one for Windows not giving support to the “creators” of the windows version?

But doesn’t ourTunes (http://ot.f00f.com/) also work for OS X?

so how do i stream my own music and look at others streaming music?

xvznt: ourTunes is written in Java. myTunes Redux is written in C++, according to the website. Java compiles to bytecode able to be run on any platform that supports Java. C++ compiles to a form that can only be run on the platform it was compiled for. OS X includes a Java interpreter, and it’s easy to download one for Windows or *NIX. Hence, ourTunes is multi-platform. myTunes Redux appears to have been compiled for WinXP (only?).
Like all things in life, there are trade-offs. ourTunes went GPL and Java. myTunes went C++ and WinXP. Use what works for you.
eh: Actually, it’s easy to do Windows but not OS X. It appears that these are not plugins, but applications written to interact with iTunes over networks. They implement some or all of the communications protocol, request songs, and then divert the data streams to files instead of codecs. The protocol is iTunes, the program something else entirely.

I’m still totally confused. Could someone please explain some real life applications? Can I download any streaming music from any source?
If not, what can I do with it?

if you arent on a network then you can do next to nothing with this program…
on a network, people can ‘share’ music with itunes, which effectively allows them to stream music from one computer on a network to another on the same network…
this program expands itunes functionality and allows you download and stream, as opposed to merely streaming.
