As reported earlier today, Apple’s iTunes Music Store sold its one billionth song a little after midnight Thursday. Apple has now revealed the name of the person who downloaded the track and what song he purchased.

The billionth song was “Speed of Sound” by Coldplay and was purchased by Alex Ostrovsky from West Bloomfield, Michigan. As the grand prize winner of Apple’s billion song countdown contest, he will receive a 20-inch iMac, 10 video iPods and a $10,000 iTunes gift card. In addition, Apple will establish a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music in his name.

“I hope that every customer, artist and music company executive takes a moment today to reflect on what we’ve achieved together during the past three years,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Over one billion songs have now been legally purchased and downloaded around the globe, representing a major force against music piracy and the future of music distribution as we move from CDs to the Internet.”

“Apple’s iTunes Music Store, which launched in April 2003, sold its one billionth song at approximately 12:40 a.m. ET on Thursday.”

if i would have won…i’d have kept a black ipod and i white ipod…gave some to friends and family…and sell the rest to anyone willing to pay…if the imac had tv out and a tv tuner, i’d keep it in the living room [not that my tv is large enough to make it into a home theater]...i would also sell the itunes card and buy some lesser value itunes music cards for music, save some of the money, then GO COMPLETELY INSANE AND SPEND ALL THE REST OF THE MONEY!!!!...not really…guess it doesn’t matter cause i didn’t win… =[

Coldplay??? BARF!

How cool would it have been if the 1 Billionth Song was something like Inverted Jesus by Satan’s Host.

No way man do you actually believe he is for real?!? That’s hilarious. I have to wonder how old some of these people are.

I hate downloading music. It’s just so boring. I like actually driving to a store and paying way too much for a CD. Then taking it back to the car and trying to get the stupid package open. Then I listen to every track all the way through and then play it non-stop all week long till I get so sick of it that I don’t listen to it for a month. It’s an art really…

Still, an iMac and 10 video iPods would be sweet. Heck, just one would be sweet. Not to mention the SCHOLARSHIP TO FREAKIN’ JULLIARD! Is this guy even a musician? Damn I’m gonna have to work my ### off to go to Julliard and he gets in free with 10 iPods! Lucky ducky…

What are you supposed to do with a $10,000 iTMS gift card?  I wouldn’t want to use it, as I prefer to purchase CDs, or higher bitrate files.  And if you decided to sell it, you probably wouldn’t get much for it; perhaps $500.00 or $1000.00.

I don’t know, I would say some would pay $2000 and more if publicity whent out about it being on ebay.
I agree you, if i had that much money I would want to buy the whole cds and not just itunes songs. Right now that’s what I do because it’s so much cheaper, but if given the chance I would be buying the cds.

I just bought a song on iTunes a couple of days ago.  Why could it have been me.

Heh, how much do you think coldplay’s record label paid apple to have their song be the “billionth song downloaded”

Posted by JoeT on February 23, 2006 at 10:49 PM (PDT)

JoeT: I know…the 500 millionth (was that a milestone?) was another popular song, but the first one that was done as a prize, perhaps 100 million, was something from Electric Samurai. Still, considering this kid purchased the entire album, Speed of Sound had to be singled out by Apple. It’s all political.

He could always use the $10,000 on itunes movies and such… whenever they come out… if he sells like 2 of the iPods he’ll have enough $$ to buy the new ipod, whenever it comes out…

OMG! This is going to be the only guy in the world with an iPod that has 100% legal music bought in the ITMS

As for the 10 ipods I got, I think I will keep one black and one white one. I may sell a few on ebay and they always make good presents so .. wink
