“During the summer, Apple became one of the coolest companies in America. At least that’s what youth marketing experts who follow the tastes of teenagers say.

Thanks to the iPod, the iTunes Music Store and the PowerMac G5, Apple is one of the hottest companies in youth culture, say so-called “cool hunters,” researchers who track buying trends among young people. [...]

This fall, the iPod is the No. 2 ‘must have’ item for the back-to-school season, right after new shoes, according to Look-Look’s August youth culture newsletter. A new computer or laptop comes third on the list, specifically an iMac or PowerMac G5.”

I see 1 dozen to 2 dozen iPods everyday here at ASU.  I can’t believe how many of them are carried around naked, though.  Why won’t people get/use proper cases?!  I couldn’t imagine a naked iPod wink

Anyway, I wouldn’t call it the #2 must-have next to shoes, but I most certainly love mine on campus wink

ok so it is possible to get it stolen - so what? its possible to get everything stolen these days, so u carry your ipod in your pocket not your bag.
there are at least 4 ipods in my school, one owned by a friend, the other 2 ppl ive seen with them and one by me. last year, it was a nerd gadget coz only me and a couple of other ppl in higher grades had them, but now i have a new 30GB, its starting to maybe get popular.
i think the ipod is really made for school because
- you can put your timetable in the ipod calendar
- you can play games when youre bored after school
- you can listen to music at the back of maths if your teacher doesnt mind=)

iPod is not a ‘need’, so how can it be a ‘must have’?

I fully agree.  When I bought my new powerbook g4, the “everything a college kid needs” rebate popped up, and said that if i went for a printer and an ipod, i could get a 300 rebate, essentially making the $100 printer and a 10G ipod $70.  So I went for it.  I got everything, and after playing around with my powerbook, I realized it didnt have any word proccesor except a 30 day trial of MS works.  Everything a college kid needs…  So really, trying to write a paper on an iPod would be just as effective as trying to write one on a stock powerbook.  What a scam… had to buy MS Office V.X, and out of angst, i picked up a microsoft mouse too.

That’ll show em.

The Ipod would be cool for a back to school item. It would be a fun thing to have provided that you have the money to shell out.

however, is it a needed item for school? NO

The Article is CRAP…

I think a personal computer desk top or laptop would be good, a PDA, calculator or whatever would be much more helpful for SCHOOL….  Ipod would be a good leisure item to have…

Hey Samir, if you took the marketing slogan literally, then you deserve to be put out the extra cash! Get with the program - all marketing is embellished twaddle, even by Microsoft (shock!).

Would someone please offer some worthwhile criticism of this article?

you guys are such a bunch of idiots. read what the article says. it does not say that you NEED an iPod for school, it says that teens who are trendy want an ipod so much that they consider it a “must have” just the way the right pair of shoes is a “must have”

i think this shows that Apple has marketed this product very, very effectively.  Sadly, teens set many consumer trends these days so by Apple penetrating that akrt so well it will only help the company overall, as the brand name becomes more important.

I wish I had an eyePod. That would be radical.
