New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

Well there those that fill up ipod and those that don’t. Maybe those that don’t should stick with 10gb while the rest of us bicker about missing out on precious space for more music and files. smile

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

Obviously, nobody is going to want to listen to 10,000 songs in a row… but it’s nice to be able to *choose* what you want to listen to from your entire collection. Before I got my iPod, it seemed like no matter how many cd’s I carried around with me, I always wanted to listen to something that I left at home. Not a problem any more.

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

For all you folks saying you just bought a 15/30 gig, Apple has a 10 day price protection policy. If your invoice date is Aug 29 or later (I think), you should be able to upgrade for free.

I, unfortunately, missed that date by about 5 days. Drat. ::grin:: But, I’m getting the new one (40 gig) anyway. I figure $50 (10% restocking fee) for 10 gig is cheap, since a 10 gig iPod is $300, and solid state MP3 players cost upwards of $100-$200 and have way less capacity. It’s a deal in *my* head, and - ultimately - my head is all that matters to me. ::grin::

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

my original 10g is still in perfect running condition and used everyday.

i have no plans to “upgrade” until there is a problem with it.

seriously… 40 gigs of music for a subway ride or excercise? most of us probably really only need about 8!

i wish i had money to throw around

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

i was upset about this, having ordered a 15 gigger refurb from the apple store two days ago. that is, until it arrived (today). Apple must have run out, because they shipped me a 30 gigger instead of the 15 gigger smile

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

Only a question: What happens if my 15g breaks? I mean, if something happens that’s under warranty, but what they can’t fix? will I get the 20gig version, then? hmm…
I also feel a bit… well, don’t know. 15 gig is filling up much faster than I expected, and now while I could’ve got 5 gig for free… : /

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

I ordered my 15 GB IPod a week ago online at the Canadian Apple store. I received an email this morning from Apple that my IPod was automatically upgraded to 20 GB.

If you did not get this email and you recently ordered online then may be you should call customer service.

Cheers

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

I’d be insanely pissed off if I bought a iPod within a week of this. Well most people don’t need all that memory? I see iPod as music lovers and have a lot of music to listen to. Who is going to buy iPod if your libary is just couple hundred songs, unless they are really well off.

John - What you describe is just about a lot of mp3 players out there right now. So why not bring your business to those companies? I mean a lot of companies have a better battery life and cheaper and no scratch prone casings! Not trying to insult you but just curious, it seems you want a strip down model of current iPod models for the market.

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

Apple must be getting the bigger sized hard drives for same price as old ones from Toshiba. So they are passing that on to consumers. No big deal.

There will be some firmware and hardware revisions but no real difference from April models.

Mac: Ollie's iPod Extractor 2.1

There doesn’t seem to be any documentation.  What does it do that’s better than the others?  Does this copy songs from an iPod without going through iTunes?  Does this get around the iPod “copy protection?”.

Inquiring minds want to know…

wait, it’s not like models were discontinued!  Just think of it as the 15G was upgraded to 20, and the 30 was upgraded to 40.  It’s quite simple.

I’ll need a MUCH bigger wallet to be concerned with keeping up on the latest and greatest. That said, has there been any news why the 15GB was discontinued? Are there any known issues that Apple would rather not talk about right now? As a recent 15GB owner, I’m less concerned how much more I could’ve had as I am about the thing going belly-up right after my warranty expires!!

So does any one know if these units are what Griffin Tech was waiting for in order to release the new iTrip? If new firmware was the culprit of the delay as rumored, you would think these new units would have that it them. From what I have read, the new units are exactally the same but for size.

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

Apple, please release a 5GB model for $199!

5GB is more than enough for most people. Not many care for xx GB, steel back, included earbuds, screen size or the money you spend on packaging it. Cut all of these things and make an affordable mp3 player.

And where the spare battery slot???

Stop ripping off & sell more, before some other company makes an iPod killer.

Does anyone know why Apple has released the upgrades so soon on the launch of the 3rd Gen models (April 2003)?

Still no cheaper iPod? 10GB should have been dropped in price to atleast $250.

And no additional features? Just a simple bump in hard drive capacities.

Who wants a $400 paper weight? Same fixed internal battery.

Amazon & other retailers are still selling old ones for same price, they better drop the price asap smile

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

I got the 30GB a couple of weeks after release, and I just exceeded 15GB of music files.  I’ll be perfectly fine staying with my 30GB, by the time I reach that much there’ll have been at least two more iPod upgrades.

Why carry all my music at once?  So that when I get the urge to hear Sweeny Todd, I have it.  I remember dreaming about a device like this back in 1985, but I envisioned a boombox with a keyboard on top.  It is great when reality exceeds your dreams.

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

kainjow, you are correct. If one starts throwing “other” files on the iPod, it could fill up quite fast. It just boggles the mind thinking about 40 qigs that fits in the palm of your hand, when the first Mac I OWNED only had a 250 MEG drive.

New 20GB and 40GB iPods released

If I was implying no one at all should get the new models, I didn’t mean to. I was just saying not everyone uses 100% of their iPod’s storage capacity, and spending another $49 to return, and purchase the newer model for something that offers nothing more than increased storage capacity might not be worth it for some people.

And yes, I am feeling ripped off. I probably will go through the “hassle” I spoke of because I bought mine so recently, however those of you who bought yours several months ago and still only use a few GB, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m sure Apple has the 4g iPods planned for the holiday season, so “break” your iPod, and take advantage of your retailer-warranty-plans then. wink

But remember Randy, people do use iPods as backup drives also along with their music, and 40G seems like nothing if you’re backing up your hard drive and your music.
