I have to say that I really have a strong disliking towards most of the long-term Apple “customers”. They have an arrogence that is just breathtaking. They give Apple a bad name, with their attitude of put up, or shut up. And by being like that, help Apple get away with things that most companies can only dream of trying.
Why people get like that is beyond me.
My way of thinking is that when you pay your money, regardless of the manufacturer or retailler, and especially when the the item is only designed to do one thing, if it fails in that task, then the item is usless. And should be fixed, or at worst, refunded.
I am a first time Apple buyer, and I don’t think I will ever trust them again. And certainly, will not be buying anything else from them in the futre.
I for one, will be gob-smacked, if Apple actually fix most of the problems with the 3rd gen iPod, and there is quite a list of “bugs” that need addressing!
Hum, I’ve had my new 15Gb iPod for two days only, and did not know about this issue. Now I understand why, from the very first song I listened to, I had to put my volume near 95%.
I think I’ll try to get the earplugs mentioned above.

Okay, first up, my hearing is fine. I don’t have problems hearing any other source and my other portable equipment is fine at about 3/4 volume. Usually just under.
However, my docking iPod isn not fine. I can mostly manage with it at full volume but if there are any slightly quiet songs, I can’t hear them and I just can’t use the EQ function at all because if the volume is okay on the MP3, it becomes distorted when I use the EQ setting.
Here’s another good example. I put the iPod through my computer speakers. To get a decent volume out of them I have to put the iPod on full volume AND the PC speakers.
If I do the same with my CD Walkman, it’s deafening! My old solidstate MP3 player was fine volume wise.
All Apple need to do is have one extra setting in the Settings menu to have the volume cap on or off. It’s just a firmware upgrade not rocket science! As for costing more to test it, that’s just tough! They shouldn’t be selling the thing if it’s deficient.

I live in the states and use a second generation ipod, but this may work. I read that if you put all the settings of your mac to USA then it will fix itself, this means changing the timer, license and so and so forth. It’s definitely worth a try. right?
With the disclaimer that I don’t use the Bose headphones, I have found that noise cancelling headphones make your neighbors conversation come in clearer than in a noisy environment. Noise cancelling headphones can lower the volume of constant noise, such as airplane engines or trains clicking down the tracks, but they cannont reduce voices.
For complete isolation, try some Etymotic earphones.
Shame on you for forwarding us to this crap review. Long on words, short on substance. He doesn’t mention battery life at—surprise, he has no really experience with the new machine yet—and the review is chock full of spelling mistakes and repeating phrases. Horrendous.
Good news for musicians but bad news for record labels. God, now you don’t even need a record label to get your music out there. You contact the iTunes Music Store and they distribute it for you! This is the RIAAs worst nightmare. Their big fear with music swapping was they they will no longer be needed and here Apple goes and makes them obsolete pretty much overnight!

Have you noticed that if you unplug the iTrip after you’ve turned the LED off, the LED turns back on when you plug in the iTrip again? It doesn’t retain the command the same way it retains the frequency.

I got a new 15 gig on a warranty replacement for a dead 10 gig (1st gen) last month. I liked the look of the old one better at first. But as more websites post side by side pictures, the more I like the look of the 3rd gens. The old design looks like a brick compared to the new design. And that is quite an accomplishment considering how beautiful and refreshing the old design was. It’s just too bad that new design sacrifices battery life for the smaller size.
Th writer is correct, the output of the new iPeods is lower than any other personal stereo I have ever had. It is also very expensive for what it does. No-one should be suggesting that iPod buyers go to even more expense just to hear the thing in the same situation other personal stereos take in their stride.
I returned my new iPod weeks ago as it was too quiet, both the headphones and the line out. I could not wait for Apple to fix it, and judging by my previous experience of Apple’s customer service I was pretty sure that they wouldn’t bother anyway.
I am sticking with my old iPod with the old version of the software until a decent MP3 player comes along with a headphone out and a line that have normal volume levels.
For me the EU iPod failed 50% of the time in it’s main function: playing audible music.
I am glad to see that someone is making a fuss about it at last. Apple should not be able to get away with the way they treat their (strangely) loyal customers.
I tried these on my recent trip to the US, and I don’t know if the QC2 is as good as theQC1’s.
Sure the new design is far better as they do fold flat and reduce the size of bag you have to tote around, but whether the demo models were low on battery power or not, I just felt the amount of sound the 2’s cut out was less than the old model.
The point for me for getting the Bose would be to cut out high/low noise AND speech - there is nothing worse than sitting on a noisy train or somewhere and you get the loudmouth on his mobile sharing his conversation with 3 other countries!!
But from my tests of the Bose in store the speech can still be heard - annoyingly clearly as well. They would be great for eavesdropping conversations if that is your want. But I think after using them for a short time my Sony EX70’s cut out more noise and speech.
I know I said I’d have them on my shopping list but I think I may strike them off it for now.

Hmmm, I’ve noticed that my 3rd gen 10GB iPod produces wierd effects when the graphics equalizer is used, especially at higher volumes. If perform tests (lineout, headphone etc) don’t forget to disable it.
It would be great if iPod could use the bass expansion algorythm that Sony devices use. My MiniDisc player etc sound really excellent with high end cans (Sennheiser 590’s) but the iPod is washed out, and the eq settings introduce unwanted distortion. Yeah, I love my iPod ... but i’ll love it even more when the volume/eq issues are sorted out.
Tried iLyric 0.7 and I think it’s great! It found 24 of the 32 songs I searched for (little slow searching maybee).
One annoying thing (especially in slow songs) is that you have to scroll the wheel on the iPod to prevent it from returning to the “play-screen” after some seconds…
Is it impossible to make the lyrics scroll automaticly with the song...? Couldn’t such information be stored in the file?

I just received my iTrip yesterday. It is a cleaver little unit that fits into the headphone plug. It is powered by the iPod and configured using software that you load onto your computer and then onto the iPod as a playlist. Then using the iPod you can select what frequency (FM) that you want to use. You can also turn off the blue LED on the iTrip, which I found to be annoying and quickly turned it off.
I use a PC and didn’t have any trouble with the software load. Nor have I had trouble with the iPod since. I need more time to evaluate the FM signal, but from my early tests I would guess that I’m going to be very pleased with the sound. I’m not sure if the sound will be a good as the direct-wired tape adapter that I use in my other car, but it did sound about as good as any commericial FM channel last night. The transmitted signal was clearly strong enough as I sat in my Jeep. I doubt that other types of vehicles will have trouble receiving the signal.
Now I need to figure out what to do about my case since this iTrip sticks up about 3/4 inch higher.
Anyway, I’m giving it a thumbs up recommendation.
I’m surprised that the iTrip doesn’t work with the new iPods—don’t they have the same headphone jack? Maybe it’s a software issue. The firewire port is not actually used. All communication/signalling occurs via the headphone jack. There are two platic tabs that fit into the firewire hole, but these just keep the iTrip aligned with the iPod. Indeed, to charge the iPod while using the iTrip the directions state that you simply turn the iTrip and install it so that the firewire port is exposed.
Except for the severe overreaction I agree with Tony. Apple-lovers have always been unequivocal content with their Apple stuff, a bit of (self-)criticism would be to their credit. When a product has a signifigant flaw there has to be discussion (and a solution), especially when the flaw is ridiculously bound to frontiers.

If you pay £400 For an iPod, and are a lover of non pop, rock or simular recordings made with a volume compressor in the studio, then this low volume IS A BIG ISSUE, and by saying it’s not, just makes you a compleate #####. Here’s why…
Hmmm, I just got my £400 PORTABLE MP3 player, it’s great, and LOOKS fantastic. Just one slight problem with it, I CAN’T HEAR ANY OF MY MUSIC ON IT WHEN I GO OUTSIDE!!!
But I don’t care, I just love the bragging rights, just because I own an Apple iPod, it just does’nt matter that I cant use the MP3 player for listening to MUSIC on, because it’s an Apple, and it’s an iPod, jeez it’s only a fashion accessory!
