Apple past, present, future, Analyst says iPod the leader for only 2 more years?
Up and running yah, but relatively shrinking. They used to be #1 fer chrissakes!
“For its fiscal year ending September 27, 2003, Apple reported just $6.2 billion in revenues, three-quarters of it from the sale of personal computers. The father of the PC—and, remember, the industry’s number-one vendor in 1980—has since sunk to a lowly ninth, behind competitors Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM, just for starters. Sadly, Apple is also behind such no-namers as Acer (seventh) and Legend (eighth). So much for innovation and creativity. These clone-makers, based respectively in Taiwan and China, exist solely to churn out gray boxes at the lowest possible cost.”

iPod vs. high-end audio
obvious thing is, real sounds better than digital sound. why? because its the original sound. then it becomes compressed. now, i ain’t no uber techno genius, but when sound is compressed, it has to lose something, or else it wouldn’t be compressed. high bitrate sound may sound good and not very noticeable, but theres bound to be some loss that people with super hearing can notice

“When will companies learn that it is going to take more than these types of MP3 players to be any match for the iPod. Yet another victim to the iPod monster.”
Delusional.

O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have
olsonbw - Don’t get me wrong I can understand your reasoning. And if it could be done without the many side effects I would like voice abilities as well.
I am drive, while using my iPod, pda, laptop, and cell phone concurrently. I am not a great hazard as I am skilled, where as my mother has issues with the lights, but that’s another topic…
So I understand the usefulness. But the voice ability adds a lot of problems, most pressing in my opinion would be the battery effects, due to increased power usage. If the Ipod has the bare minimum to do mpeg audio playback, then would not a much more powerful processor be needed? If I could have it without the side effects, great, but with the problems it would bring.
Lastly, the Plus! Add-on for Windows Media player had a “voice command” ability so to speak, and I sure was not impressed. And I have more processing power than the iPod could ever need, and a much better microphone than an iPod could have built-in.
To sum up, if we get to “Star Trek” type power consumption rates, and voice command intelligence, then I am behind you 100%...
Course Apple is the only company that comes to mind that could do it right if they felt like it, so maybe you are on to something here.

Shakespeare's Sonnets on your iPod
I downloaded mine on a 20G. I’m thrilled with the small size of the file, but there does seem to be something weird. Now when I click Extras, then Notes, it takes about 15 seconds for the iPod to load the notes. I can hear the hard drive spinning and growling. Is it normal for the iPod to have more trouble with Notes than music? (Mine loads each song lickety-split).
Thanks!

iPod vs. high-end audio
“I love my iPod but it’s no high-end audiophile gear.[snip] if you think your really getting the full spectrum of sound out of your iPod, your not.”
Tell that to the editors of Stereophile—who rarely stoop to even listening to such gear. They tested the line-out, mind you (the iPod’s line-level output is probably the best of all portable HD players), but they clearly found it to provide accurate, “high-end” sound when playing uncompressed audio (not just subjective; they actually measured the outputs), and named it their “product of the year” for 2003.
As for the Zen sounding “better”—the iPod and the Zen are clearly, IMO, the top two on the market right now in terms of headphone jack sound quality. But they’re so close that it’s really a matter of opinion as to which is better. The iPod has a bit more accurate/flat response, while the Zen seems to be a tiny bit more hyped. Different people like different things. At least the iPod and Zen are attempting to provide great sound, as compared to some of the other models on the market

iPod vs. high-end audio
Really, with HD real estate being so cheap nowadays, there’s really no reason to encode lower than 320. I actually rip to .wav when I can - sounds so much better. Unfortunatley, the I-Pod software/firmware updates choke on these files to much…not consistant.

RIAA sues 532 music downloaders
“you turn to the US constitution and look why IP is protected, than you find, that is was ment for the contributors to the knowledge and cultural heritage of the American people.”
Interesting, the founders of the US seem to have had a very interesting relation to IP. Well, to other people’s IP. In many ways, China today is like the US in the early 19th Century…
—————————————
When America was poor, its citizens “stole.” We took the intellectual property of Dickens and other foreign artists without paying for it. We didn’t call it stealing, but they did. We called it a sensible way for a developing nation to develop. Eventually, we saw it was better to protect their rights as well as ours - better because we had rights to protect elsewhere, too. But we only imposed this burden on ourselves when it made sense to do so. Until 1891, we were a pirate nation.
Things have changed. Now that we’re the world’s leading exporter of intellectual property, we’re also the most self-righteous about the importance of protecting it globally. Indeed, we can be vicious in our self-righteousness - threatening trade wars with developing nations for the crime of being just like us.
A block of powerful developing nations should first take a page from the US Copyright Act of 1790 and enact national laws that explicitly protect their own rights only. It would not protect foreigners. Second, these nations should add a provision that would relax this exemption to the extent that developed nations really opened their borders.

RIAA sues 532 music downloaders
I think the problem lies deeper. There is violation of IPon one side, there is a definitly greedy industry who wants to perpetualize the status quo on the other side. And there is a VERY questionable understanding of IP. If you turn to the US constitution and look why IP is protected, than you find, that is was ment for the contributors to the knowledge and cultural heritage of the American people. This would include the artist for sure (even if it shows a poor state of culture) but not the merchants and distributors. So violating IP is against the law AND IP as ugly mutated from it’s original idea. People sense that. Or do you think its benefits the population, that everytime early works of Disney are due to enter the Public Domain, magically IP protection is extended by law makers? There is some serious fixing to be done. After that, enforce whatever needs to be enforced!

iPod vs. high-end audio
Duh. Well, first, discussing audio codecs is almost as fractious as discussing politics or religions. What sounds good is completely subjective ot the listerner. If 96kbps MP3 sounds good to you, great. If you cannot stand anything but live performance by the Wiener Philharmoniker at the best auditorium, great.
No big deal.

Apple past, present, future, Analyst says iPod the leader for only 2 more years?
I agree. Eventually the market will be educated and realise there are other alternative to the iPod that do better job, but until then we will have to put up with the claims of the iPod being “the best MP3 player ever” etc.

it doesnt take a rocket scientist to point that out. i think most of us know what the article says. it may be a boring discussion if everyone says “this guy is cool’ he’s complimenting on the digital sound of ipod and comparing it to a million dollar sound system. i have one too! isn’t it lucky for me to have bought one… just like this wonderful guy. oh he’s my hero”
