iPod vs. high-end audio
The article says that the author’s MP3s were ripped “at high bit rates for maximum quality.” Note that he doesn’t write “highest”. In fact, in a response from the author he states “I encoded the two main CDs I was playing for people…with the Fraunhofer MP3 encoder at 224 kbps Constant Bit Rate, via MusicMatch 8.1.” Not “highest” by any stretch of the imagination.
As far as MP3 vs. AAC. Sorry but I did my own listening test and decided that at the high end, MP3 beat out AAC. YMMV.

iPod vs. high-end audio
This isn’t written as a real review as much as its a character piece about the lunacy of these audiophiles. It is similiar to the shows about Las Vegas “whales”, it shows off a type of person that most of us will never be…

iPod vs. high-end audio
It’s an interesting test… but NOT a blind one. That is the factor lacking in most audio “tests” I see thrown around.
No big deal, just an anecdote of a little encounter someone had at the CES.
(I don’t think people are attacking iPodLounge.)

iPod vs. high-end audio
People read the news on this site with a great deal of apprehension because any negative news attacks their purchase of a very expensive and self-indulgent toy

Ha ha ha….I’m so glad that I don’t pay taxes (as a student)...I’d hate to think I was paying these idiots wages.

iPod vs. high-end audio
Why is it that recently ipodloungers ##### about every news topic posted on the site? I don’t mean everybody, but I hey give the authors of this site a break, I honestly believe they’re doing the best they can - finding good news related to the ipod aren’t easy to come by.

Why would anyone attack this author or his article
cause everyone who thinks they are an expert on any board or forum is also a negative person.
It was an excellent article and very informative.
The first poster was anonymous so his opinion is irrelavant and flame-bait.
I agree though if he wanted to test capabilities he should have rep’d the iPod community with some AAC action.

Apple past, present, future, Analyst says iPod the leader for only 2 more years?
What the hell does an analyst in a staid banking firm know anything about consumer electronics or cool? Give me a break, it’s pie in the sky theory.

iPod vs. high-end audio
Bah,
Stupid response!
The author stated explicitly that the songs were compressed at the highest bit rate for maximum quality.
Mr. Ito designed a $500K stereo system. Good chance he knows what the h-e-double-hockey-sticks he’s talking about.
The author explicitly states that he surveyed several different audiophiles and played more than 1 stinkin’ song!
The article was someone light, but with a fine point. That the Ipod isn’t bad in terms of sound quality. You can infer that others, such as the Creative labs Zen NX, which has better sound than the Ipod(I have an Ipod and a Zen), post similar results.
Why would anyone attack this author or his article. It illustrated the point that all Ipod/MP3 player owners can feel pretty good about their listening experience. He also implies that the the present being pretty good bodes well for the future as compression technology is still in its infancy and will only improve.
“Until you know it could be better, you don’t know that it’s bad.” Ain’t that the truth!

An idea for iPod - user removable battery
But Andrew, you yourself said it’s only $100 to get the battery replaced by Apple (or $50 to do it yourself with a little elbow grease). You’re making an assumption that Apple would send back a refurbished iPod instead of your own. If someone can replace the battery by themselves with an online guide, I think they can replace the battery at Apple with minimal effort, and I’m sure that Apple wouldn’t send back an unengraved iPod to someone that had it engraved.

If he wants high end audio. WHY is he using MP3 when AAC is MUCH better. (shaking head with disgust)

iPod vs. high-end audio
What an absolutely ridiculous test.
This is so far from the truth of anything. So many factors contribute to the end result of the song on his iPod. Was it ripped to WAV? if so, what ripper & CD/DVD-ROM? Was it compressed? if so, what bitrate and encoder?
And how can this Mr.Ito know what the true sound, should sound like? The guy could have broken eardrums.
What an absolutely ridiculous conclusion… the iPod is a portable music player. They’re hooking it up to $500,000 systems and trying 1 song off it.
bah, stupid article.

Canada music - I thought you were all about ‘cultural preservation’? The Canadian gov’t can’t have it both ways - either open or closed. You preach about alleged cultural imperalism in satellite signals and in movies/TV from the US ... but then you want it to be ‘open’ when you want it to be - which is it?
It’s your governments fault - not Apple’s.

An idea for iPod - user removable battery
I am amazed at how people whine about the 8 hr battery then whine againe when the solution might mean an ipod that is a hair thicker.
Why does the ipod need to be the thickness of a piece of paper?
I wouldn’t mind if the ipod were a tab bit thicker.
I would certainly take a thicker ipod for a 12hour battery.
My phone is just like this, the lower 2/3rds of my phone back is the battery. Nice tight fit..easy to get off if needed. I see no reason why an ipod could not incorporate a similar feature.
My major worry is not the day to day life..I have a Belkin and I am fine w/ having to recharge my ipod almost every day….my concern is having the battery die out completetly after 18 to 20 months. I want to get a solid 2 years out of it..not 1 year and 6 months.

Seth, tthat’s true but I guess it just depends on preference. Me, I would like my old iPod back. And what about people with engraved iPods? It’s just a matter of replacing the battery.

I really like how the rio karma has folders for each letter in the alphabet. Lets say you click ‘A’, it expands and shows all the artists/album/songs that start with A. This is invaluable when you have 5000+ songs and want a specific artist.

O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have
Line-in for sure.
I record a lot of talk radio shows.
Now, right now I can stream the show either live or from an archive and record it in real time with a netrecorder of some sort but this means having to have the computer on and to mess with setting up the recorder..on and on. ANd it means having to be awake to stop it.
To be able to sit on my sofa..run a cable from my little radio into my ipod and let it run..if it’s a show I am recording over night I can set the sleep timer.
My other want is a built in AM-FM radio on the 4G.
