O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have

Druid - thanks - I’ll check on that.

An idea for iPod - user removable battery

Well, nice thought, however you have to know, that Apple has introduced a smaller battery and embedded it into the PCB on the 3G iPod to reduce the overall thickness.

A battery as shown in drawing, would increase the thickness again.

Size and styling.  The author doesn’t think too hard eh?

Those clips would probably wear out pretty fast too.  My cell phone’s battery slides around quite a bit and I don’t think it’ll be long before I have to get a new phone.

*yawn* Do any web authors have any insight anymore or is running at the mouth considered a substitute?

Pepsi ads to feature teens sued by RIAA

This whole Pepsi/Apple ad is about advertising and catching people’s attention….of course. Point taken. At least I don’t have to buy a Pepsi/whatever in order to legally download music.

On the Macrumors site, it refers to one of the sued teens who appeared in the commercial. Apparently, she downloaded 950 songs over a 3 year period. True or not, I find that number laughable. Try about 1000 a week on a home broadband connection.

Um, Olsenbw, if you have ‘live updating’ checked on your smart playlist in iTunes, it _will_ update on the fly on the ipod.

Pepsi ads to feature teens sued by RIAA

I think the point is continuously missed, even by the media (unless they are purposely word bending to scare more people). People aren’t being chased for downloading tunes. People are being chased for downloading hundred and thousands of tunes and keeping their computer running 24/7 with a cable or DSL connex with kazaa on basically acting like a server for people to get the music constantly. These people aren’t average downloaders just getting a track or two to sample an artist. Some of them even buy machines just to serve the files. I thought that clarification was necessary.

Don’t be a #####.  The overwhelming majority of football fans are in the United States.  Further, a much smaller percentage of Canadians watch football.  Marketing has always been about playing the numbers.  Canadians are not any of Pepsi’s concern when it comes to this commercial during the Superbowl.  Smarten up.  Your sarcastic comment is neither insightful or well done.

Just to clarify, Olson, it would be “play album The Beatles”!!

What a stupid statment.  I forget that as a Canadian I am only allowed to watch hockey.  What is the NFL?  I have never heard of football.  Oh wait I have isn’t that the game with the black and white checkered ball?

O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have

1) I want to be able to TELL my iPod what I want to listen to. This is mainly while I’m driving or doing something else where looking at and concentrating on my iPod isn’t a good idea. Think of having a button that you push and then saying, “play playlist 60’s.” Or, “play album white album.” Or, “play artist Beatles.” You get the idea.

2) I want my playlists to update on my iPod. For instance. If I have a playlist where I tell it to play all Jazz songs with rating higher than 3. I want my iPod to update that playlist if I up the rating of one song from 3 to 4 or one from 4 or 5 down to 3.

3) No gaps, especially because of audio books that I’ve imported from CDs. I don’t think Apple will do this however because they will sell less books from AudioBooks.com if they do.

More file formats supported is what I’d want more than anything - WMA, Ogg Vorbis, MP3 Pro… I had to rerip all my CDs when I got my iPod because I was using Ogg format for them.

O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have

Recording is a niche feature, but in that niche it’s *extremely* useful.

I sing in concerts and stuff.  I often record them using a stereo mic (with permission &c), and in some cases have mastered the results onto CD and distributed them for small amounts of money.

Previously, I recorded onto MiniDisc.  However, it’s a real pain getting the sound from there onto my HD; it’s a pain changing MDs during the interval (if there is one—I’ve lost the end of more than one event); and the compression doesn’t help, either.  If my iPod could do this, it would make life an awful lot easier…

But I gave up on waiting for this feature.  I bought a cheap 6GB Zen Jukebox; the battery life is terrible, it only accepts line level so I need to take a pre-amp too, and it’s *far* too big for listening or anything else, but it does the job.

What’s most frustrating is that the iPod hardware is clearly capable of recording; we just need Apple to either add the feature to their software, or else open their software up a bit and let someone else do it.

Come on, Apple—like Ogg playback and some of these other feature, it won’t cost you anything!

Crossfade. My god, crossfade please already. What is the point of adding other stuff, giant hard drives etc, when the ipod still can’t play back a single cd as it was recorded. Tell Apple as i did.

And Canada is also much more of a hockey nation, with no participation in the NFL.  Guess what buddy, it’s not aimed at you.  Sit down.

Thanks for the inside info.  I have really been wanting to know what the ad would be like.  BTW, do you still need a writer for ipodlounge?

Crossfading between two songs would be amazing (like in iTunes). Being able to delete songs directly from the ipod is also on my top priority list.
Please apple…

As a Canadian, I still can’t purchase anythign from ITunes. Also as a Canadian, I still can’t be sued for sownloading music (although I can be sued for uploading).

What solution do you think I and most people will take?

O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have

There are a lot of improvements that can be done in the On-the-Go playlist. Reordering the songs is one of them. An essential one if you ask me. I have used other players that have this feature and when I found out that ipod does not, I just couldn’t believe how something as fundamental as this is not part of its features. Come on Apple… it’s not that hard…

To be perfectly honest with you, it’s fine as it is, in-line recording who needs it not me, MiniDisc does a far better job. Too many whistles and bells and it ends up difficult to use. Keep it simple but elegant.

How about nested playlists?  The first might be “Star Wars Soundtracks” then “SW”, “Empire”, etc.  I hate not being able to ground playlists.

And what about long songs or playlists being shrunk a little so you can read them?  The iPod display is limited to about 15 characters.  It feels liks Dos’s 8.3 days.
