"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
Maybe it’s because I am not endowed with such discriminating ears, but the iRiver and Zen do not sound any better or any worse than the ipod when using the same headphones. Or maybe I don’t pretend to be pretentious.
Is there empirical data for such claims?

“Sound quality isn’t as good as Irivers player or even nomad zen.”
What is a “nomad zen”? Is that like a wandering, peaceful Samurai?

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
I think what he’s trying to say is that the ipod is not the best in terms of specs. Sound quality isn’t as good as Irivers player or even nomad zen. So yes you are paying extra for style over quality.

Apple posts new iPod commercial
Steve Jobs’ well-deserved sobriquet at Apple (and later at NeXT) was “reality distortion field.” Many times I had seen him baldly tell a lie to suppliers, reporters, employees, investors, and to me; Stross’s book provides many examples of this. When caught, Jobs’s tactic was to apologize profusely and appear contrite; then he’d do it again. His charm and apparent sincerity took in nearly everybody he dealt with, even after they’d been burnt a few times. For those who didn’t know him he seemed utterly credible.

Apple posts 'coming soon' Pepsi-iTunes giveaway
If it credits your account, then it will definitely be possible to save up to 10 dollars or how much the album cost and buy it. Woot woot, Be sure that I’ll be standing next to the garbage/recyle bin doing my homework..waiting for people to throw away their pepsi bottles. I might even post ads saying i’ll pay 25 cents for each winning caps on my floor in my dorm hall.

HP already had an iPod of sorts
I currently own a 40Gig PJB. As far as I know it was the first one out there and I have had mine for years. You can take out and replace the harddrive (though 80Gigs is the max and can cause some probs.) You can also take out and replace the battery…hmmm, can’t do that with the ipod!
All in all a great device!

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
“The simple fact that people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars more for an iPod, when equal technology is available in a less impressive-looking package, points directly to this analogy.”
If one wanted to waste money on an mp3 player simply for status one might consider the BeoSound 2 from Bang and Olufsen. With 128 Mb removable SD Ram card, docking base, software and optional A8 headphones the unit retails for a whopping $1400. Did I mention it has no LCD read out? To me, that makes as much sense as “Hey - let’s go to the airport and drink!” I got my 40 gig iPod simply because even though it’s only has around 4,000 songs as of today, I can find exactly what i’m looking for in seconds. If you think the ipod is all Bling, then you need to do your homework, Samurai Dude. It truly is all about the music. And as Sony President Kunitake Ando put it a week or so ago on NPR, in direct reference to the iPod: We’re (Sony) no longer competing with quality and style, we are now competing with concept.

Apple Store: iPod mini #1 Top Seller
it’s not too hard to imagine the iPod mini being the best-selling model in the iPod line at the moment. Think about it: when you have 730,000 iPods sold between October and December, what’s the likelihood that you’re going to encounter a huge rush on the existing models in January? Pretty small.
The iPod mini is, however, brand new and being released as far from Christmas as you can get. That means that you aren’t going to see as many people holding off until the end of the year to buy. The new model therefore takes 1st place.

When will companies learn that it is going to take more than these types of MP3 players to be any match for the iPod. Yet another victim to the iPod monster.

2 million? That is impressive.
Remember though, in 1979 when the Walkman was introduced it cost $200 in the US. That’s around $500 in today’s dollar. Seems to compare quite well with the iPod, whose average retail price across the line is less than this. Wasn’t the 10GB model the most popular until recently?

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
Ubik: Apple has sold over 2 million iPods (2 millionth in early December). True, that doesn’t equate to Sony’s numbers for Walkmans, but the iPod costs several times more than the Walkman ever did. AND, I do believe that in its first 24 months, the iPod actually outsold the Walkman’s first 24 months.

Pacific Rim Technologies announces iShield II aluminum case
I too emailed them about one for the 30/40 GB back when I saw them in the photos from MacWorld posted on this site. I recieved a very nice reply stating that they had no plans to make this for the larger 3G iPods but they do have the less attractive iShield I case available for the larger iPods. It’s too bad, I would’ve bought a couple of colors if they made the iShiled II available for the larger iPods.

TEN Technology readies Bluetooth naviPlay remote
I went to http://www.impulsesoft.com/ and checked out the stats for their other bluetooth solution (iWish)and this is what I found:
Bluetooth
Profile: A2DP, AVRCP, Headset, Handsfree
Module: Class II
Connectivity: Point – to – Point
Range : 8 meters
Specification: BQB Certification (version 1.1)
I’m guessing the range will be something simular to that.

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
Another pointless ‘news’ item. I simply dont care what this person thinks about the iPod being a modern day replacement for the sword.
It is quite ridiculous to siggest that a consumer electronics device has replaced a centuries old symbol of honour.
I’m not trying to deny him his opinion, I’m just bored of these silly so called news items.
I work for a national UK newspaper and this type of artcile is an Opinion (instead of news) article, ipodlounger please take note
and maybe label them as such in future.
Not only is this incredibly self-important but trivial and very, very dull.
Almost as dull as this reply.

It did say that Impulsesoft was a short range wirless solutions, so i wouldnt be expecting to leave your ipod in your car while your in the gym… but maybe
it would likely work better if you wanted to keep your ipod in your locker and transmitted from there…
