O'Reilly: Five things the next iPod software version needs to have

i would really like to see line-in recording so i can record music from friends without having to take home the cd. i also record streaming radio from israel so it’d be nice to be able to do it straight to my ipod instead of having to record it and then transfer it. However, i don’t think it will happen. If you could record from a line-in straight to you iPod, you could, essentially, run your iPod [after first use for formatting etc.] without connecting to a computer [just browse through recorded songs - a pain, but could be done], or at the least, with a computer, but without the internet [record from line-in, connect to computer, organise songs with iTunes, disconnect from computer.] This would mean that the iTMS would not really be necessary, as long as you could find the cd.

I’d like to have a dinamic compression, particularly useful when you listen to calssical musci through headphones and cannot constantly adjust volume (i.e. while driving).
Can anyone tell me if it still possible to record voice through the headphones in the 3gen ipod? Only through a 50$ micropgone?

“I do think line-in recording is very useful. Especially for people playing an instrument, or have a band. You can record you’re music and easily tranfer in to the computer. ” - Birnie

Haha, I knew someone would go there… have you ever heard of this: http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/ - this is Apple elegant and “better” solution to what a 21st century band should have.

And why do other branded mp3 players have this feature? because they don’t have GarageBand (Apple want you to buy their computer as GB comes with it for free)...

I myself just realised how smart Apple really is ;o)

tis true, the iPod as im sure you know isn’t about features, its about ease of use, styles, GUI amount of harddrive space, no other player manages to accomplish this at the moment, i dont a fancy eq 5 line mode bar display or a fm receiver/transmitter digitiser tranducer drive, i want something that plays my music, quickly and efficiently, if i wanted something else, i would’ve got something else. and you should all have the same veiw or you shouldn’t've bought the iPod

Amen to playback without gaps.

Question: Do other MP3 players suffer from the gaps between tracks?

“... if it wasn’t usefull, why do all the other mp3 player’s ...have this feature?”

It’s called feature puking. Those other players have all kinds of unnecessary features, but since the public isn’t buying those other players, their differentiating features clearly aren’t in demand.

I do think line-in recording is very useful. Especially for people playing an instrument, or have a band. You can record you’re music and easily tranfer in to the computer.

Also record from a portable player, dvd, radio, and that kind of stuff. And if it wasn’t usefull, why do all the other mp3 player’s (iriver, creative zen, ibead etc) have this feature?

Apart from line-in recording - how useful is it really? when you have a computer and can use syncing to transfer music at super-fast speed bewilds me (it may have worked for MD, but it was only to transfer a couple of hours of tunes max). All other suggestions would only making the iPod’s UI somewhat complex and confusing…

For example: re-ordering play-list on-the-go, when you “picked-up” the song/artist/album by holding the central button, where would you “drop” it in? as suggested by the author. Think about it, currently the scroll-wheel only “high-light” the selections but does not go “between” selections, so it won’t work as if I drop it on top of something would it appear before or after (as wished by the author)?

Not saying the suggestions are bad, just not-well-thought-out

I’d like to be able to browse playlists by artist. That would make my day.

Windows: iTunes 4.2 Released

When I download tunes from itunes, they are protected AAC files.  I use a program called Transcriber which requires that the compression be MP3.  Is there any way to convert the AAC files I downloaded from itunes to MP3.  Is there a way to unlock the file?  Any ideas?

doesn’t anybody want an accurate battery meter, and maybe even an improvement to battery life like they did for the 2G’s a while ago?

you would think that the ipod could queue up the next 32 megs (or however much it is) of cache with music before it all ran out, but it doesn’t..making it very irritating.  I’d also like to see maybe the last one or two songs played kept in cache so you could inconsequentially go back a song or two.

I’d also like an SDK; apple could really open up the platform—everybody would want one.  Imagine the number of programs you could have—more than the average computer which only has 15 gigs of space.

iTrip Needs More Than Fine-Tuning

I was using my iTrip today and bumped it and the sound came over my car’s sound system. I may be incredibly naive but it almost sounds like there is a mike in the tube. Am I going nuts?
