"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
I never bought my iPod to “show off”. I buy my electronics with the following criteria. What is the best product I can afford. If it happens to work out that I can afford the best of the best, I get it. I don’t compromise my tech toys. I don’t care what anyone else thinks and I never have. If they think I am a show off - oh well.

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
It’s true some people buy an iPod to show off, but I don’t think they do so to show they belong to a certain category of people. As for myself, I actually dislike seeing so many iPods in other hands. I feel like a sheep.

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
“The simple fact that people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars more for an iPod, when equal technology is available in a less impressive-looking package, points directly to this analogy.”
Equal technology? I can’t think of any. And don’t say the Dell DJ, because it has a poor interface, larger packaging, and isn’t “hundreds” less. Then tell me about something that is Mac compatible.

"The iPod is the modern-day equivalent of the Samurai sword"
Selling a 1.3 million iPods in 24 months sounds impressive, but is not that huge a number when you realize that from 1979 to 1999 Sony managed to sell over 186 million Walkman cassette players, an average of over nine million a year. Apple still has a long way to go to before it’ll achieve the ubiquity that Sony once possessed.
The samurai quickly became lethargic, fattened parasites who retarded Japan’s economy until they were swept away by change initiated by the arrival of advanced American warships, technologies, and culture.

So Chris, do you live in Japan? Because I know I don’t. So how have electronics replaced side arms in Western society? I think your line of thinking is flawed to say the least. I would have to say it’s silly.

TEN Technology readies Bluetooth naviPlay remote
“it’s not clear what the maximum range will be until the product ships.”
if its bluetooth, it’ll be long enough ^_-
The only problem is price. The Navipod itself is already soo expensive a basic infrared remote. Imagine something with bluetooth, 8 hour li-ion battery, and lcd screen.
if it was around the same price as the navipod, i’d order it straight away!

Apple posts 'coming soon' Pepsi-iTunes giveaway
Remember you can redeem yellow caps through April 30, even after they’re gone from the shelves. So switch to Pepsi for a short while and stock up for April too!
I wonder… can you combine several caps towards an album purchase, or is it “one cap per purchase” which would encourage buying only singles? (Granted, getting an album free as singles is nice too—but it would take fewer caps—and clicks—if you could pay the lower album price.)

From what I’ve heard, Pepsi and MD have seperate marketing divisions, and it’s not going to be affected by this campaign.
If it is though, then great, as this is about the only Pepsi brand I will touch…
Sierra mist is like a crappy 2nd place generic lime soda.

It’s a nice looking case…too bad they don’t make it for the 30/40 GB iPods :( I’d definitely get one if they did.

Korean iPod clone released
All you Korean bashers don’t know what you’re talking about. Korean online games are maybe the best in the world - anyone played Lineage? They entire country is wired for super broadband and to the Koreans the fact we’re still stuck with dial-up is worse than a joke - it makes the US look like a third-rate country. LG and Samsung also make some of the sweetest consumer electronics at the moment and make Sony look sad and old. Samsung also own most of India by now - if you ever leave your podunk Iowa townships you’d see just how extensive Korean interests are outside of the US.
And about India. The “Santa Clara” company that invented the iPod and lease it to Apple identify themselves as “A Santa Clara, Silicon Valley and Hyderabad, India company”. SO there - much of the precious design for the iPod is coming straight out of India. Well done, it’s a curry box.

I had one of the first Intellivition sets many years ago. I seem to remember that scroll disc being on that moved, though, not a touch-sensitive wheel as the iPod mini’s is. Isn’t that true?

Korean iPod clone released
First of all, Apple did not “threaten” Samsung over their player - the reason it looks and behaves very like the iPod is because Samsung and Apple both license the design from a SDanta Clara music player design engineering company.
Secondly, Apple do not have a patent on the original iPod scroll wheel, but they do have a patent on the mini iPod clickable scroll wheel. It was awarded only a few months ago.
I have doubts they could enforce this patent for too long though, because the Mattel Intellivision video game system in the early 1980s used a substantially similar clickable scroll disc in its gamepads.

You can also hang the small receiver around your neck, attach headphones to it and roam around the room while your iPod sits on a desk somewhere. it’s not clear what the maximum range will be until the product ships.

Good for them. The iPod is the best design around. It’s about time somebody did the smart thing and copied it rather than trying to reinvent the (scroll)wheel.
As for any lawsuit Apple may have in mind, I’d like to see them try.
