ABC News: Music Labels Threaten to Sue Net Users

That’s because Grohl was in one of the most influential bands of all time. Definitely the top of the 90s. I mean recently he had the never released single “You Know You’re Right” from his Nirvana days, then his 3 new Foo Fighters songs hit it big, (he had 10 top hits off his FF album last year, he’s played with Velvet Revolver, AND he had a hit with Queens of the Stone Age. Granted he doesn’t need the money because Nirvana would have him sitting pretty, but he continues to be an artist who produces good music and is growing with age, and growing better. I actually had a little inside info that two main reasons Jason Newstead left Metallica was 1) the whole Napster conflict, and 2) he never felt or was treated like part of the band. Lars kind of used the “band’s name” to go on his crusade when actually James Hetfield and Kirk really didn’t give a hoot about music piracy. I mean bootleg tapes are how Metallica got STARTED, but Lars doesn’t seem to care lol. Music piracy is something that has been done for YEARS. I don’t think it’s necessarily right because you should get profits being the artist especially if it’s good work. However the music industry brought this upon itself with those outrageous prices. Do you know any other retail industry that charges a 300% markup on their merchandise? 300%... That’s plain ridiculous.

"Hello iPod, Goodbye, MD"

Minidisc was great in it’s day and I hadn’t listened to mine i ages.  However I used it the other day to record some audio sound bites from some DVD movies (matrix, 25th Hour) uisng it’s optical input.  I then put them into my ibook using iMic and final vinyl, chopped the sound up with Audacity (great piece of freeware).  Say what you want MD has one big advantage over iPod you can record onto it in a numer of different ways.

Sony should have made it mp3 friendly but hten we’d be moaning about having to input a disc!

BusinessWeek: How Apple Spells Future: i-P-O-D

As for the piece I think the guy lost sight of the fact that Apple are a computer company, which is what has kept them in the game, low market share but high margins and still we keep coming back for more.  The iPod is great but so is my iBook and the iPod needs it to be any use.  I can see where he’s coming from with it and hell I hope it happens sell iPods to them windows folks.

oh and mac OS does crash but not very often and the G5 is the fastest desktop personal computer. The gripe with Apple is that they never seem to let the reader/viewer know the benefits of buying their machines in their tv adverts.

"iTunes and the Technology Beyond MP3"

For 0.99 cent at least I want a WAV file, not a compressed one, be it MP3 or AAC or whatever!

I use my home stereo (AudioAlchemy DAC, Primare amplifier, custom-made speakers w/ ScanSpeak tweetwrs and Seas Woofers) and I can easily hear the difference between an original CD and a burned one or the difference between an uncompressed music file and compressed music.

0.99$ per song could may be reasonable for full quality. Also consider that the audio standard of the future should be the 96k DVD-Audio with a resolution much higher than the CD.

So… what’s the future of music market? Higher quality at an unreasonable price (even for people like me that invested a lot in hi-fi system) or cheaper low quality compressed music?

COnsider the evolution of the music market in the last 20 years. When I was a teenager (about 15 years ago) an LP was quite cheap but the hardware (turntable, amplifier, speakers) was quite expensive. When companies like Sony - originally an hardware producer - got into the business of software (CD’s) they reasoned: let’s reduce the price of our CD players or DVD players (DVD is extremely young as format and you can find a player for less than 100$) so once people got one they will spend their money on the discs, whose price has been triplicated compared to the old LP’s.

What did Apple do? Simply go back to the origin: they noticed that software (MP3) is now available at a little price (basically for free) so they gave those consumers a high-quality pricey hardware to play it!

Personally, I bought an Ipod a couple of week ago, I like it, I like the design (the original, of course) but still I would prefer higher quality music at a reasonable price. My reasoning is simple: if CD costed half price I would buy MORE than double, and Music industry would than have higher revenues in the long term… but they just rise the price and reduce the catalogue… music as a form of art has hard times… meanwhile I’ll just listen to my 70’s favorites on my Ipod, there’s not much to miss out there at the moment!

Regards.

Also, Foo Fighters are awesome and so are Queens of the Stone Age, as well as Nirvana….and guess what? I have CDs from all of these people and the few that I don’t, I will….which goes to show you that if the bands are good people will buy them anyway.

Apple discontinues old iPod remote

Don’t Matter, I love my iPod, and it plays music really well. It’s Apple that is losing my affection. They didn’t ignore first-gen iPod owners when the second generation came out. They offered firmware updates. They made the new remote controls available as an accessory. That was good, even cool treatment of Apple’s customers. Now I’m worried that this might be a thing of the past. Obviously I don’t expect my second-generation device to get the benefits of new hardware. I do expect firmware updates to continue as appropriate; Apple taught me to expect this. But Windows iPod users such as myself still do not have 1.3 software, and still do not have any proper support for Audible content, something which was most recently promised for “early May” of this year. Apple gives every sign of no longer caring about second-gen owners, some of whom gave Apple top dollar for the best iPod available just three months ago. What enhancements have they received? Why can they no longer purchase replacement remotes?

ABC News: Music Labels Threaten to Sue Net Users

You know what? Now that I think of it I’ve heard of the MPAA, but I was still correct in saying there’s no MIAA…lol….anyways I agree with you guys, and yes I was pleased to get the new Linkin Park Album cheap, especially when the DVD-less one still came with production footage on the art (I’m an artist what can I say).....I still find it funny that the truly great artists are the ones that don’t care at all. None of my favorite bands seem to care: RHCP, incubus, System of a Down, etc. It’s only the people who put out albums with two good songs (e.g. most pop stars) that complain, oh and of course Lars. Anyone ever notice that Metallica only seems to care because Lars cares? Lars isn’t even that great of a drummer. Look at Dave Grohl….do you think he cares? Hell no, he wants you to listen to whatever band he’s playing in and there’s no doubting that Grohl kicks ### at whatever he’s playing/singing, so there you have it….

You whiners sleigh me - does your farkin’ iPod play music or did you only buy one for “way cool” games and BS Note Pads?
Come on - you bought your iPods (hopefully) to play music, and as long as it does that, pipe down.  Apple, did add many FREE enhancements for us Old-Skool iPodder’s - give it a freakin’ reast already.

It’s a real shame that Apple doesn’t support those early customers of iPod who were the ones who supported Apple when Apple was developing the product.

Maybe potential 3rd generation iPod buyers should consider another MP3 player.  What’s goning to happen to you when the 4th generation comes out?

Apple 10GB iPod for $280

FutureShop Canada now selling iPods

Future Shop is a rip off, they sell the 10, 15, and 30 gig for $459, $629, and $799 respectively when the retail price at apple and any apple dealer is $459, $599, and $749 CAD…...

BUT you can give them a taste of their own medicine because they offer the lowest price guarantee…. Just price match and you can get it 110% of the difference back, and their website offers free shipping…. So it could be better than buying it at the other stores…..

Though I’m waiting for a better price than retail…..

Actually, 3rd generation iPodders ought to pray just as hard, and those who don’t own an iPod yet should watch carefully.

a broken remote is the least of your worries.  You better pray with the rest of us non-3rd generation ipodders that they even continue to support our ipods !!! (i.e. firmware updates, internal parts, etc.)

BusinessWeek: How Apple Spells Future: i-P-O-D

How many mid to large corporations out there utilize nothing but MAC servers, MAC workstations, and so forth?  How many leading business related softwares out there would work with MAC OS?  Would system adminstrators in mid to large corporations today switch their current environment to MAC OS instead of Linux and/or other favor of Unix?  How many essential business hardwares currently available work with MAC OS?

All and all, it would be a long shot for MAC to gain popluarity in business world instead of just a few casual computer users.  Apple has to rethink it’s strategies to be able to become player in the mainstream.  It has to re-write it’s policy to allows more 3rd party developers to build or write stuffs for MAC.  Heck, it needs to make MAC works with more stuffs than now.  It needs to revolutionize the industry with something useful and legit instead of releasing statements such as “MAC OS NEVER CRASH” (Really?!) or “Gx IS THE FASTEST COMPUTER ON EARTH!” (Jury is still out on this one).

iPOD on the other hand is indeed the best effort by Apple for ages.  It works just like any other MP3 players.  It can store as much data as most other HD based MP3 player.  However, Apple managed to integrate STYLE into this little thing.  That’s the reason why it wons the hearts of many including non-MAC users like myself.  As for other products from MAC, I always wonder how successful Apple would be today if people can load Windows into iMAC instead of MAC OS.  At the very least I can say you can find a couple of them in my house!

Vaja announces new Classic cases for dock iPods

BEWARE OF THESE CASES!  I have the classic case for my 2nd gen iPod and they have 2 MAJOR flaws:

1.  no reverse stitching on the case means it will scratch your iPod every time you try to put it in.

2.  cutout for the headphone jack is too small which means you can’t use any headphone you want.
