I Lost My iPod

I can relate Kenneth. I lost my 20 GB iPod over a month ago. Almost same story as you, after a long day at work. My iPod was attached to my bag but it came loose in lugging it from my car to apartment and I didn’t notice it gone for hours. I had registered it, yet had neglected to put my name in the contacts list or put a label on it. Due to my neglect I had considered it gone forever. Fortunate for me it landed in the hands of a Mac user who was kind.  They went through my contacts and got my mobile phone number from one of them. To say I was shocked that someone in Los Angeles would return it is an understatement. (I even had to beg the person to take a reward). So don’t be suprized if your iPod makes it’s way back to you. Wait a few weeks. And yes, my iPod now has an ugly label on the back and my full contact info as well. I was lucky once.. but I won’t count on luck again.

I Lost My iPod

Hey guys, thanks again for the condolances. I’ve decided that the 15 Gig is the way to go. I may have enough this pay, or I might have to wait two weeks.

This time I’ll be sure to have it engraved and make sure it’s on my person when I get into a cab :)

I did register it, btw, and a friend made a good point today. My name is in my contacts list on the iPod. Hopefully someone will be honest enough to bring it back, but I accepted long ago that it is gone.

Now I get a dock, solitaire and I think I’ll buy one of those 20-hour battery packs! Woo hoo!

you must treat your Ipod like cash. as mp3 players are becoming more and more popular thanks to the Ipod. people arent as surprised of seeing one in public and would love to get thier grubby little hands on one for free. may i suggest a wrist strap that way even if you put it down its still attached. i found myself in the habit of putting it into my pocket whenever i need to pull out my wallet. just watch out with keys or change because your bound to scratch it up.

I Lost My iPod

Hi Kenneth! Man what a sad story. I feel your pain. It’s like losing your pet or companion. I always have my IPOD with me and never let anyone touch it but me. I know how hard it is to lose something so valuable that you’ve paid your hard earned money for. If I still had my IPOD 10gb I would sell it to you but, have sold it to buy the new 30gb. My condolenses.

Well guys… the white or blue thing is not new… in all Apple’s ads you see powerbooks & iBooks with a blue-light apple logo in the back… mine is definitely white (yellowish even)... i had to open it up & put a blue paper to make it blue…

I Lost My iPod

I lost my iPod when I was in Thailand last month.  I was at the beach, lounging in a beach chair.  The chair was of the paid type, where you pay some guy a dollar to use the chair and an umbrella.  It wasn’t until the next day that I realized I had lost my iPod and I immediately thought of the beach chair.  I rushed back to the spot and asked the people who rented the chair to me.  They didn’t speak a lick of English, but I made some hand gestures and the guy’s eyes lit up in recognition.  Wonder of wonders, they actually had my iPod!!  I’m not sure if they were really honest, or if they just had no idea that they were holding onto something worth a couple months of their salary.  In any case, my story had a happy ending.  I’m sorry yours didn’t.  As for the replacement, wait an extra paycheck if you have to and get the 15gig.  Isn’t an extra 5gig worth a two week’s wait?

Did you register your Pod with Apple before it got lost?  If someone were honest and intent on seeing that the lost Pod gets back to the rightful owner, they could contact Apple with the serial number on the back of the unit and I would think that Apple would try to get in touch with you if the unit were registered.

If you have not registered, I would do that ASAP.  Long shot, but might get lucky, you never know….......

as a citizen of toronto, and knowing the pain of losing something in a cab, ill give you a word of advice: you wont get it back mate. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but its like finding a grain of sand in the atlantic. There are atleast a dozen cab companies, i recommend you go back to the place you tagged it down, and get a list of all the cabs you see ( names of them ), and call the comapnies ASAP.

That might help. If you had a good driver who cares about his customers.

I Lost My iPod

I actually work for a Mac reseller, so I get them at dealer cost. I know the 15 Gig is about the same as the 10 GB plus the accessories. I just want to replace it as soon as possible, and then buy the accesories later. I may get a 15 if my paycheque is big enough.

I have some faith that some people would return it if found. Remember, most non-technical people wouldn’t even know what it is and once the batteries are gone it would be totally useless to most people.

When I called the cab companies to file a report it took me about 2 minutes to describe what it was and what it looked like. The operators had no clue what an iPod was, or an MP3 Player for that matter.

Thanks for the condolances everybody, but this post is more of a public service than a call for pity.

jsmoove7, like I said in the original post I was working for 18 hours mainly doing heavy lifting getting our new store ready for opening. When I got in the cab at 3:00 AM I was barely awake. Under normal circumstances I know where my iPod is at all times. Under those exhausting circumstances I slipped for a split second. It cost me my iPod. I think most people are like us, very careful but we are all capable of a brief lapse and that’s why I recommend the labeling. I am glad to hear you are so careful with yours and I hope noboidy else loses their iPod.

Thanks again, everybody.

Sorry `bout your loss…“I feel your pain.” Thinking….How about a future enhancement to “brand” the ipod’s firmware/cmos or lock via password etc. the ipod in some way to which the ipod would “phone home” whenever it was connected to the net via itunes/driver etc, as well as making it unusable… This might be a good way to trackdown a srupulous ipod thief or, atleast make it unusable.  Intern having a message of some sort to drop it in a mailbox, with the apples address on it postage paid via apple. Then you could be able to get it back simmilar to lost keys or cellphone… If it was registered… Just an idea.

Can’t afford it? It’s only a $100 extra. Go to Best Buy (Do they have those in Canada?) and use the no interest payments for 6 months option, and pay $60 bucks a month.

i feel sorry for his loss, but i’m one who would never sit my 30 gig $499 investment down anywhere in public but in my pocket or carry case.  even when i let others hold it to look at or listen to, its never out of my sight.
