We made a clarification and cleared earlier comments on this article because they together had the potential to confuse readers regarding functionality of Apple and Global Source's USB 2.0 cables. The original version of the article noted that direct-from-computer recharge capability was possible using both of these USB cables, however, it did not specify that USB recharging is limited to the iPod mini we tested with the cables.

This omission in the original article was compounded by the included photograph showing a (FireWire-connected) third-generation iPod, which led some readers to assume that we were saying that all iPods could be charged by the USB 2.0 cable. In order to clear up any confusion, USB 2.0 recharging can only be accomplished when the USB cable is used in conjunction with an iPod mini. FireWire recharging can be accomplished when used with either the full-sized iPod or iPod mini. We're sorry for any confusion we might have caused on these points.

I looked on the Apple store, and Apple cables seem to be more expensive than these cables. I think you have something backwards.

Insider tip on cables, if you are close to any apple store, find out if/when they have refurb sales. I've bought numerous cables for my ipod for home & office this way, they are Apple cables (normally USB2.0/firewire) for $10 on the refurb rack.

Or you can go to Expansys.com and buy the exact same cable (that everyone seems to sell and stamp their name on) for about $6.50 USD.

Expansys isn't quite shipping the cable yet (as of July 23, 2004), but they will very soon. It's under the brand name "Green House".

I'd rather spend less than $7, than spend $17 for the same cable (which is what most everyone else seems to charge, give or take a dollar).

On top of it, the Firewire versions don't even come with a 6-pin to 4-pin adapter for use with PC laptops. For $7, I could understand an adapter not being included, but for $15 or more, one should be included.

At any rate, I bought one of these Firewire adapters from Meritline.com (go to http://www.meritline.com/nemefiie13ad.html) They're white in color (so they'll match these cables, which isn't a huge deal, but it's nicer to have things match), and they're only $5 USD!

Bottom line? One of these cables and a white Firewire adapter for under $12! A much better deal.

It looks like the Meritline link I supplied in my above post doesn't lead you straight to the adapter I mentioned.
