Ok, how many have run into the defective volume control chip problem??

My wife had her's for less than a week and 'zap' the thing hisses at full volume and can't be turned down. Here is the link that explains the issue:

http://www.jbl.com/home/product_support/jbl_onstage_support.asp

I can't believe she is willing to pay almost $300 CDN for this item. The only things it has going for it are its solid construction and reasonably good sound... when it works properly!!

my 40gb photo worked well at the apple store, but when i put it on my onstage it didnt work. i had to use the cable connected into the headphone jack. what am i doing wrong?

senecaripple, my guess would be that it's the interchangeable plastic mounting panels. Onstage uses different plates, each supporting the basic connnector but with a differently-configured cutout, to match your iPod. I have the 40gb iPhoto and it's thicker than most iPods- so while the connector is the same, the thicker body of the 'Pod keeps it from fitting inside the cutout on some connectors. I would guess that at the Apple store they use the wider cutout plate on their Onstage, so that any iPod will fit. Is it possible you have run into the smalller cutout and that is whhat is keeping you from squeezing in there?

After looking at all the options, I decided to give the On-Stage system a try. I picked mine up at CompUSA for $149. Got to admit, I'm pretty impressed. I needed something for my office and to take with me on the road. I spend a week or two a month in a hotel. These fit the bill perfectly. One piece plus the adapter so it is easy to pack and carry and impressive sound. Of course, there is no sub-woofer or anything so it doesn't have that booming bass, but I'm sure others in my off and the hotels will appreciate that smile I'm sitting here with "The Wall" playing and I'm really impressed with the sound.

I got my JBL On Stage at CompUSA for $149. So far, I'm pretty impressed. They put out far better sound than I expected from such a small unit.

I want to get the OnStage so bad, but I really am scared of the volume issue. I so don't want to be out the $$$ for shipping. What to do...

Can you use AirClick for the remote? I am concerned that it will not control the volume on the speaker.

Does anyone know?

I thought I will wait at least 3 weeks before writing about these speakers given the amount of problems people were having. But now, I can say they changed the way I use my IPod. They are portable enough so that I can carry them from the living room to the kitchen to the bed room. I now use the "Sleep" and the "Alarm" feature of the IPod and the sound is just great.

And at about 100$ they are good value.

Just an FYI,

JBL is offering a FREE adapter for Photo and color ipods for the Onstage system. Hopefully, it will remedy the problems with not providing power to the ipod and the inability of my computer to regonize my 40 gig Photo when it is connected through the old style adapter!

Mine should be here in a few days.

So, i got my *free* adapter for the photo ipod today from JBL and it works great! The Onstage syste (with the adapter) now powers and charges my ipod, and does not require the 1/8" plug wire to send sound to the speakers. This system is great!!

I just received my JBL on stage after a week of anticipation and I am happy to report that this little speaker system ROCKS!! I must admit that I am a very picky person when it comes to audio, as I have studied music production, I work as a live sound engineer, and I spend way too much on sound equipment, but this little unit from JBL ROCKS! It does a fantastic job of reproducing low frequencies in the 80-120Hz range, has descent stereo separation, and it can play for hours without ear fatigue. The biggest complaint I have read is that it doesn't operate off of battery (or Firewire) power, but I think this is due to the fact that it has some fairly powerful amp circuitry that would drain batteries pretty quickly. All in all, JBL (the company that also makes some of the best studio monitors) delivers great sound from a small package as elegantly designed and well-built as the iPod itself. My rating: A++

UGGGGGH - this is one of the worst buying experiences I've ever had. My wife bought an OnStage unit; within a month, the dock connector no longer worked. We called JBL/Harman, and they sent us a new one (we had to pay shipping to return the defective unit). This second unit repeated the problem within two weeks. Again, JBL/Harman offered to replace the product, but we had to again pay to ship the old unit back. The third unit has now broken down on us again (same problem, plus the audio buttons don't work now, either), also within a month. JBL again offered to send us a new unit, but I'm tired of this. Asking for my money back got me transferred to a different department, where I spent over two hours on hold before hanging up and calling back. Looks like I've been transferred back into the same Netherworld of "please hold", as it's been about 15 minutes now. Unbelievably bad product and service. The sad thing was that while it worked, it was great.
