People - there is no way this is the final release version of this product. They took what they had and showed it to us to satisfy the hype. Cleverly, by adding the features that everyone here correctly points out are missing, it'll seem even more of a bargain when it eventually becomes available.
For a start, without CDMA, this thing will be unusable for the internet, in Scotland/the UK at least - GSM data prices here are frankly unbelievable...3G (CDMA) is absolutely VITAL if this is to be any use here. At all. And I SO WANT ONE. In addition, the camera will get better. Bang and Olufsen managed an excellent camera in their handset - Apple can do the same. User replaceable battery, or at least an easy replacement, is also a sensible assumption.

It is gorgeous though...

EVDO is a definate MUST!

Upgrade the camera from 2 to 3-4 mp.

Voice Dial, which is built in to the Treo (and other devices) would be a really nice feature.

8 isn't near enough to hold what I have in music! Bump memory up to 20 and this could be one sweet gadget.

Instead of relying on and installing after-market batteries, why not just include the best one available and use it as a selling point?

Hmm. I'm surprised Apple hasn't said anything about voice recording and I'm surprised someone hasn't already asked. Now that that iPhone has a built in mic it could definitely be feasible. Jeremy, you didn't happen to ask Greg Joswiak if there will be a voice recording application for all those podcasters did you?

What?? No replaceable battery? I was going to get one of these, but now I'm not so sure. I'd be too worried about missing calls to enjoy the other features.

I can't wait till mine arrives! Can you transfer a Vonage (or land line) number or only a cell phone number? Also, I hope your review will discuss whether to use IMAP or POP.

excellent, comprehensive review although i think you focused on so many positives, but left out a few pretty big negatives.
no group SMS, no forwarding SMS?
no status screen! the display's either on or off. i can understand the point, but if i want to see the time i'd like to be able to just look at the screen, not press the unlock bottun to see it. same with missed calls/SMS/text/email. There should be icons on a standby screen rather than having to unlock the screen and look at the main menu.

Regarding: Headphone Jack

What's somewhat startling to me with regards to the headphone jack issue is that the prime reason I don't use my Motorola SLVR with iTunes is because I don't want to carry around the separate headphone adapter. The other big reason is that the volume doesn't go low enough on the SLVR.

I still love my SLVR for a phone, but those are the top 2 reasons I don't use it as a music playing device.

I would think that Apple wouldn't want to repeat this problem (the need-for-adapter problem) with the iPhone.

In a weird twist, it turns out that the iPhone headphone DOES work with my Etymotic ER-6is. That's not to say I don't feel for all the people for whom the adapter is a necessity.

As long as the iphone does not support push synchronisation of my exchange Calender it will be useless. On my Trinity Phone a calendar item that my assistant writes in outlook is shown on the phones calendar in a few seconds. And if I edit it this is shown on my assistants screen in a few seconds. No need to manually pull anything and no need to sync with a wire on my business computer. There are rumours about Apple licensing MS Exchange Active Sync, but if it doesnt this is a show stopper.

The iPhone is a truly incredible device at any level of development much less a 1.0 version.

Well, sadly I returned my iPhone BT headset yesterday. I had been using a Jawbone for about a week before these came out and decided to buy one as well, to see how they compare then decide which one to keep. The form factor, ease of use, dock and travel dock were all incredibly well thought out and useful features but two things doomed the headset. 1) It uses the same ill-fitting earbud as the standard iPod earphones and no matter what I did, it simply would not stay put. Even a casual walk had the thing drooping and falling out. Terrible design flaw. 2) the sounds quality didn't even hold a candle to the Jawbone. Taalking with clients while driving, for example. They would ask me if I had the windows down (I didn't) or if I could keep repeating myself. When I would switch to the Jawbone, they said it sounded like I was in a quiet room.

I am a major Apple fanatic and tend to go overboard with praise of everything Apple, but the funcional quality of this BT earphone needs to be seriously re-evaluated to bring it up to its aesthetic and peripheral standards.Until then, it looks like the Jawbone will be king, in terms of sound quality albeit being larger in size and slightly less convenient to charge and handle.
