I used to blame iLounge causing the manufacturers to make such small openings. Reviews would complain if there were fractions of inches left uncovered. And of course they wanted good reviews here. Unfortunately for me, I always use higher quality headhones; first Etymotics and now Shure. None of those fit into the stingy hole of the Sidewinder, either the first version or this one.

That blame would have been misplaced. Besides what you see in the reviews, we do sometimes talk directly with case makers to try to inform them of industry best practices we've seen. Contour Design actually re-designed (expanded) its port hole for the Showcase Video to the correct, large headphone-ready size in order to accommodate our concerns, and our reviews actually deduct one point every time a case maker fails to accommodate oversized headphones with its design.

Some smart case makers for the iPod have figured out that tapered or flip-open silicone rubber coverage offers a great combination of protection and port access. Hard plastic, metal, and fabric case makers could integrate rubber into their cases, but generally choose not to do so. There are other options, like fabric slits, that also work quite well.

ilounge, please take photos on a light-colored table ... it's extremely difficult to see the black accessories on a black background
