Just ordered a 15G iPod. I'm literally trembling with joy. I have a PowerBook, so I'm not worried about all of the Windows issues. I've been using and loving iTunes for years. I already have an iPod playlist created and ready to go with 12GB of Music (kept it smaller for extra stuffs on the iPod). Hehe I feel like a little school girl.
As for the CDDB question, it only works with full albums. Sorry. It works by searching the database of CDs for a match where the exact same number of songs are on the CD and each song is the same length. That's why sometimes you get "CDDB found two matches: Metallica or Disney's Lion King Soundtrack" or some weird crap like that. Hehe. Anyways, I can't wait for my iPod!

Got my new iPod 15Gb a couple weeks ago and I absolutely LOVE this thing!
it is SO much more intuitive
1.) MusicMatch was bad anyway and using it with the iPod is A NIGHTMARE.
Get EphPod... even though it crashes more than Windows does
2) Average battery life for me (w/ backlight set to 2 secs) is around 9 hours on a full charge. I know this because it's on from when i start work to when I leave.
3) I got the InCase leather case for my iPod and it's great! only thing is it's open at the top and there's no way of securing your iPod BUT you have easy access to all the buttons, the bottom FireWire port and the top area. Great design, good value.
4) The remote and the cradle are almost non-essential. I sync and transfer music via the cable while my iPod is in the case and I rarely use the remote... The clip on the remote is horrible too. Can't latch on to anything plus when it's not attached to anything, pressing on the buttons makes the clip move making it even MORE irritating.
5) The iPod 15 is probably the most practical choice out of the new iPods.. that is, excluding the 20 and 40gb versions...

What is Apples idea ?
Sell me a 30gig Ipod or £399, then 3-4months later replace the 30gig model with a 40gig model at the same fcuking price.
I am so pissed at Apple, I worked long and hard to treat myself to what I believed to be the biggest and best Ipod available, and was told yes this is the one.
If i'd been informed when buyin the Ipod that they were gonna replace my model with a bigger model I would have kept hold of my cash and waited.
Why no change in price I ask ?, if the price was higher maybe I would'nt be so pissed off....
Once disgruntled Ipod owner am I . .
What do the other 15/30 gig Ipod owners think of Ipods little swap around, I'd be interested to know

Hey everyone,
Just bought the 20 gb ipod for my pc using xp. I cannot figure out MM for the life of me. Ephod seems to only have a 5 day free trial and then asks for a subscription. Does anyone have a solution to the software dilemma on this thing. I want to enjoy my ipod but so far it seems like moeny down the drain...

Back in May I bought a 15Gb IPOD and I really like it. I too noticed the annoying clicks which seem to have been taken care of by upgrading. Since MM really blows, I upgraded last week to EPHpod and really like it. I have a question though. How much usable space is there on a 15Gb Ipod ? If I look at the space usage on either EPHPod or on the Ipod under "about" it says I have 13.8GB. Is there really that much overhead ? 1.2 GB seems like a lot of lost space. Or do I need to reformat and try releoading my MP3s.

I purchased a 30 GB Zen NX a few weeks ago after much deliberation between an iPod or Zen NX.
It was a really hard choice for me, since the iPod looks so cool, is so small and a joy to use.
However, the iPod doesn't reign supreme in every area by comparison to the Zen NX.
Such as sound quality, battery life and price.
Sound quality is partially subjective (though for what it's worse many hardward/sound reviewer's (like IGN's gear) will vouch for the Zen NX)). It didn't put much weight on that, but that praise for the Zen NX's sound quality did stay in my mind.
Battery life is longer, it's rated at 14 hours. You'll get 8 hours at worst, but with easier use you'll get 11 or 12.
Price was a biggey, the 30 GB Zen NX cost me less than a 10 GB iPod would (and the 10GB iPod doesn't come with a case like the Zen NX does). That's a very large price premium to say the least.
A few other ticklers, the Zen is thinner, has a replaceable battery, and is more windows and USB friendly (you don't have to buy a special cable to use USB 2.0). (The Zen NX does not support firewire).
I don't officially recommend one over the other in general, the right player depends on the person's criteria, but one thing I do recommend is that Zen NX not be quickly dismissed. It's as small, light or stylish as the iPod, but it does pack plenty of benfits to make it worthy of consideration.

I just received my 10GB iPod yesterday, and I love it. I tried out MusicMatch for 5 minutes at most and hated it. Needless to say, I replaced it, I'm now using EphPod and I'm soo much happier. EphPod gives you SO much more control over the iPod, you can edit the id3 tags, how the song displays, what order number to play in, etc.
One awesome thing that I noticed with the iPod manager that's included is that you *don't* need to use a 3rd party driver in order to mount the iPod in Windows. Right clicking on the iPod manger, you can select "mount iPod" and it'll become a drive letter. $30 less that you need to spend in order to use EphPod (no need for MacDrive)!
A couple notes, you will definitely want to get some sort of cover for you iPod. As others have noted, it scratches quite easily. The touch button are a bit sensitive, it'd be nice if they were adjustable, but I love 'em. I'll be using my iPod while snowboarding and rollerblading, so not having mechanical buttons is a plus, nothing to break. Lastly, I've encountered a delay between actions sometimes, which is a bit annoying, but I can deal with it. For example, sometimes when I click on the select button while a song's playing and move forward's or backwards on the wheel, there'll be a delay of ~2,3s before I see it tell me where in the song I've moved to.
Overall, I think it's great. Everyone should replace MusicMatch *immediately*!

I purchased a 20GB 3G iPod a few days ago and I'm waiting (not very patiently) for it to arrive. Just wanted to let fellow Windows users out there know that in addition to EphPod there is a *very* elegant solution available:
Anapod Explorer
http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/
I've already purchased it (I was a Notmad Explorer user previously and loved it) and I can't wait to try out with my new iPod.

Paul, to answer your question, apple does not include a USB cable in the box, and I think the adapter costs like $20, but at CompUSA you can also get a firewire card for $20, which I think would be a much better option. BTW, I have the 40gig version and it rocks. I love the touch sensitive buttons, who cares if you can't press them by feel when they are in your pocket. 40gig version comes with the remote so its no big deal. The remotes buttons are raised mechanical ones. And I used to own a Nomad 3. Creative sucks in its support of the Nomad/Zen line... I waited for several months for them to fix a firmware glitch they made where if you upgraded you would get lockups, and you couldn't downgrade. Stay away from Creative! Apple Rocks... now if i can just switch my PC to a G5, life would be grand.

Hey Paul and Duncan,I could relate to what you were saying. In a perfect world I would have a MAC,but maybe within the next few months...
I agree with Patrick-your best bet is the firewire option. It was pretty painless to install. Just make sure you have it handy to install BEFORE dealing with the Ipod. I was dumb enough to skip over that step-and caused myself some grief in the process. Plus, XP is the best one to have for Winpod-it's the most painless version of Windows to deal with. You also may want to consider is the external USB option. Those work pretty well too. I can't remember the British equivelent of CompUSA,but any decent computer store would have this stuff at hand.
Also,if I had to do it all over again,I would definitely take the plunge and buy the Ipod.I run Win Me,which people say is only a step (barely)above 98,and I haven't experienced any difficulty. If anything,my chief complaint has been with MusicMatch (it's so bleeediiiin'Awful...)but that's a common complaint. The bright side is that there are so many other great programmes that you could run in Windows that they pretty much make the need for MM unnecessary. The installation was painless, and the transfer rates are blazing.Using XPlay and Ephod,I transferred 1500 songs that averaged 7 minutes per song in under 30 minutes.MM took over 2.5 hours. I really liked X-Play,and I'm planning on giving MediaCentre 9 a try. Ephod also has a version specifically for Win98.Also,in a matter of days I-Tunes for Windows will be available here in the States,so if anything... I'm glad I took the plunge.
Sorry to be so longwinded, but I hope this info helps you out.

I just read an article in Macworld mag. that gave the iTrip transmitter a pretty rough ride. The article referreed to difficulty in set up and use and shaky reception. Is anyone happy with theirs? I am currently waiting for mine on backorder. Should I be happy to receive it when it comes?

The iPod's 25 minuite skip protection sounds like a lot when I think of those cheap portable CD players with only 40 second anti-skip. How would you say the anti-skip on the iPod compares with Sony's G-Protection?
