I don't care about the battery life or the ability to shuffle songs (that's what RANDOM play is for), all I want is a cross-fader; I hate the audible gap between songs.

The reason your Rio Karma isn't generating noise from the HD is because the HD failed right after your 90 day warranty expired.
Oh, and about the complaints of nitpicking about the packaging: I'd rather pay less and get slightly less well aesthetically designed packaging, but I have to admit that unpacking my iPod for the first time was a beautiful experience. I was humming Straus's "Thus Spake Zarathustra"* the whole time.

I already have a 3G iPod that I love; it seldom leaves the house. I was considering an iPod mini for a 2nd (travel to work) iPod, but there's a 4 week wait for the iPod mini.
Then I saw the marvelous new 4G, 20GB iPod! For only $50 more, you get 5 times the storage capacity and 4 hours more battery runtime. That's a great trade-off. I'll want an iSkin to protect it, so the color on the mini would be redundant. The 4G may eat into mini sales, we'll see. Loving both of them now. the light gray wheel and perriwinkle screen don't bother me at all.

Just got my 4G 20GB iPod last week (my first iPod) and I must say I am in love. I've watched all previous generations and the value for money equation simply hadn't met my threshold (I used a Sony NetMD until now). Now with the 20GB at the magic $300 mark, I went ahead and got one.
Sound is about the same as with NetMD (at high-quality setting), capacity is no comparison, but what I miss from the NetMD is playing for 30+ hours on a single AA battery.
The original iPods were very attractive to me, but just too expensive. The 3G was good-enough, but still expensive and like previous models, the battery life was just not there. The 4G finally gives me enough runtime for my all-to-frequent flights from Los Angeles to Seoul, and with the added bonus of the new clickwheel, which I love, and a hig capacity.
In short, while not a revolutionary change, it was enough to push me over the fence.

I have just received the new 4G iPod in the UK. It came via Apple sales direct and shipped via the Netherlands. Firstly, as always, Apple service baed in Irelad was excellent. Very friendly people ad very informaive. If I needed to call in order to check delivery date, they were always most helpful and very polite. Now, the iPod itself. I upgraded from a 3G 40 to a 4G 40. The earlier model went to a friend. The new iPod is just great. Now it has the click wheel, it is even easier to operate than before, even a five year old could do it. No, it isn't radicaly different, but it just fels even more stylish than before. No small buttons like on the earlier model, that I kept touching by accident and which changed the track. I am more tha happy with the new model. It is still unmistakably an iPod, but with an edge!! Now, the packaging and extras. Well really, did I ever use the remote? No, not once ad if I do feel the need for another, I ca just buy one, yes? And wha about the case? Well it wasn't much cop anyway. And the packaging is obviously going to appeal to abroad range of buyers including those who ae stll yet to be hooked by MP3 players. I think that the packaging inside is more 'bunged' in and less 'arranged' than before, but who cares? In essence, Apple have it right, this time!! enough of a 'step up' to hook new buyers and take the iPod to the masses. The new model simply can' fail. By the way, I hae ditched the iPod headpones and am using Shure E3Cs. Canot believe the quaity...musical heaven.

I have the 1G 5 gb iPod, which I have certainly outgrown. However, I always liked the layout of the buttons and so when the 3G came out I hated the ugly four buttons at the top, and I still do. I also hated the red backlight on the buttons which I thought clashed with the classy white. I also disliked how the wheel was sticky. I think the 4G is a huge improvement because of the layout and the non sticky buttons.

Well I just ordered a 4G 20gig from Apple and put my 15g 3G on ebay. What sold me was the new click wheel and extra battery life.
The old 3G controls would some times take like 30 secs of pressure sometimes to skip the song. Maybe it was a defective button or something, didnt happen all the time but enough to be irritating.
I think most are being too critical, I think apple is doing what needs to be done, not messing with a winning product. I dont mind the grey wheel on white, or the blue tint on the backlight. It seems to be ok to be fine for me. I also never use the remote but I do use the dock, and kept that from my old 3G, hear it works just fine on 4G.
Anyways good review I ordered before I read it, and it made me glad I did order it.

I think that not having a colour screen is a good thing.
1) It keeps costs down.
2)A colour screen does not really improve any functions.
3) I have learned from my mobile phone (SonyEricsson T610) that Colour screens are actually harder to view in sunny/bright light situations.
4) Colour screens only work properly with the backlight on (and battery life is more important if you ask me).

I received my 4G iPod and I love it. I Find the gray touch pad gives it an industrial feel, I prefer it to the just plain white. It also makes cycling through music much easier. The review is excellent but I agree with a few of the others, to many of you are nit-picky and whinny about things. For crying out loud if you want a color screen and such buy a PDA and get over it.

I agree with the color thing. If it did have color screen, you wouldn't be able to view the screen as well as you can now. Think of the gameboy and gameboy color (or advance). I have a GBA and a Color and you can barely use Color without a backlight on. Just a thought.
Also, I don't know why people are complaining about the grey wheel. It's not like a dark ugly grey! It's a very light subtle grey meant for contrast purposes. I just bought this iPod on Saturday and it's my first one and I think it's awesome! My only grip is that is scratches really easy - especially on the back. But I've heard this is very common with all models so I'm not going to stress over it.
I cant wait for the 4g iSkin though

well, It just took me about an hour to go through the whole review and read all of you peoples input.
I have to say that I love how critical people are on this website. It often helps me choose what direction to go in. So don't let anyone tell you that your too critical when you find something wrong with a product or something you don't like, just let yourself be heard.
I have a 3G iPod 20 gig that I love that I have had for about 6 months now. I use it all the time and am often dissapointed with battery. However it is usually just my fault for not charging it when I wanted to use it. I love the lights and my screen is blue (which I also think is really cool).
I have the inmotion speakers by altec (very cool if you go camping/have bonfires where there is now outlets), and I was wondering if the 40 gb will work with that. It mentions it up above but it seemed like it was talking about the 20 gig and not the 40... Also will my existing dock work (I realize I will be getting a new one with the 40 gb but I will be using one dock at my pc and the other at mt home stereo if possible).
So my dillema is... I have a best buy replacement thingy and I could get the 4G for about 60$ should I do it? Fell free to mail me if your in the same boad or if you have some advise.
I friggin love this site. Very informative.

Am I the only one who likes the click wheel? It looks fine! It could be more attractive, but if I cared about asthetics I'd get the mini. The click wheel, I think, is really nice because it's so convenient. I love it. It does look kind of like a sticker, but it's fine.
This is my first iPod, and I really like it. I have the 20GB because I didn't really have $100 extra to shell out and I don't think I'll need that much space, anyway.

The Good :-
1) Slimmer (though not much of a difference)
2) Longer Battery Life (A much needed upgrade)
3)I actually prefer the blue backlight
The Bad :-
1)the grey click-wheel (white would have been so much classier and elegant)
2) No backlight on buttons
Overall,
It's not a drastic change over the 3G model unless Apple come out with some really mind-blowing "hidden features", so I won't consider a necessary upgrade

I totally agree, the gray click wheel doesn't look as good as the 3G ones.
I don't own an iPod, but I have always followed closely the iPod scene, waiting for the right time to purchase, and always waiting for them to come up with something newer.
I really would like to see the screens go colour, how cool would that be?

Great review and its a shame that the inside of the box isnt just a simple junkbox style and not like the 3G zen-like experience like the author said.
Made me feel that the 4G was a hastily done deal.:(
