Surely there will be nano compatible products that act as remote controls that plug into the dock connector port soon enough. These will most probably also work by plugging them into the dock connector on the back of the dock (yes, you lose the charge/sync capability that way, unless someone comes up with a splitter cable of some sort)

I have keep my Nano permanently in a skin because of its tendency to get scratched. In this case my 'old' iPod mini dock works better as it has sufficient space to allow my Nano to dock with its skin on.
