To ChristMouse:
Yeah, I've heard its a popular color in the States. Surprisingly, Apple's decision to axe the gold from gen2 lineup is it wasn't popular. I think they can't make a 'gold'er gen2 mini.

The AppleCenter which I bought my iPod from still has 4 or 5 1st gen iPods left (pink and gold only).

They are having a stock clearance sale for these units, selling them for RM$899. (US$237, after tax). Its old price was RM$1199 (US$315 a.t.), which the 4GB gen2 mini now occupies.

The 1GB shuffle is sold for RM799, a RM$100 (US$26) difference!

To snazzle:
I did ask the same retailer about any swapping or rebates for 1st gen buyers. He said they're considering a rebate plan and will annouce soon.

FYI: Apple iPod products sold here at a conversion rate of approx. RM5 to US$1 (vs. exchange rate of RM$3.80). Retailer's excuse is taxes & shipping.

More colors may improve sales, but inevitably some colors get singled out as poor sellers causing resellers to rethink their stocking options (remeber the lime iMacs?)

The criticism that it's a poor value compared to the 20GB iPod, while not untrue, fails to take into account the appeal to low end buyers who really can only "afford" the shuffle, but hey - this mini has the screen, playlist support, quadruple the capacity, etc., for a mere $50 more. Think of it as the deluxe entry level model, not the compromised little sis.

Apple also says the new mini won't work OR charge using USB 1. I bought one Wednesday and although slower than on USB 2, it works just fine--and charges too.

IT WORKS ON USB 1??

Jackstone,

I can confirm the the new iPod mini works with powered USB 1.1 ports. I got a new mini and it charged fine on my iMac G3 USB 1.1 ports. Transferred songs, too.

On the question of wheter the mini is a good value. I have over 7000 songs on my computer, many more than a mini's capacity. My reasoning in buying a mini is simple. I dont need to carry all of my music at one time. I have no problem loading new songs onto it every morning. Another reason is that $300 or more for an iPod is too much money for me to spend, especially after seeing two of my freinds have their 20 and 40 gig ipods stolen.

does anyone have a picture of the old pink mini compared to the new pink mini? i'm just wondering what the differences in color are for the pink. blue and green seem to be what everyone else is comparing.

hi! I just bought a new pink 4GB mini (although i'm not getting it till my birthday) and realized that I have an older Key-lime pie ibook G3... I'm positive she doesn't have a USB 2.0 port and was wondering what I need in order to run my new ipod on my older laptop... I have firewire cables but am not sure the minis are even equipped with firewire ports...

I have a blueberry one. mine has firewire, so when I get the firewire cable, I will use that, but a little powered usb 2 hub will solve your problem.

ok, so first generation ipods included more cables. ok, so first generation ipods came in a box that looked better. but - everyone that saw my 2nd generation ipod instantly fell in love with it, from the minute i opened the box. those reactions do not really bode well for all these so-called 'ipod killers' that are being released smile

consumers generally don't care about differences between first and second generation models. modern pcs (mac or pc) have usb2 anyway, and with the 18 hour battery life, who cares about recharging.

its the wow factor that counts, and this one has it more than ever. the only thing i really do not like about the ipods is those pesky headphones.. how come noone is complaining about those?

I'm getting a 6 gig mini. I just wish they'd at least give the dock, though. nothing else to complain about.

To everybody way up at the top asking about the battery, The Second Generation iPod mini uses PortalPlayer's new Chipset. It's more power efficient than the old one, hence, the power increase. http://portableaudio.engadget.com/entry/1234000450034463/
