Iphone jack has extra contact for the mic in the headset. Other headsets are too short to make contact. Adapter will likely force you to unplug the headset to talk? Anyone have confirmation on this?

iPhone headphone jack is a normal 3.5mm headphone jack (with connections for a mic), but it's recessed into the case. Headphone plugs with bulky or L-shaped moldings may not fit and you'll need this short extender.

I just bought this extender and though it works, it is UGLY AS SIN. Oh. my. god. It really is that long. It just sticks straight out of your iPhone practically half a foot single handedly making the beautiful device clunky and look like crap. Stay away. There must be a better solution.

@ihate ... Griffin's solution looks pretty good but it's not available quite yet. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/headphoneadapter/
Still pretty long (prolly longer than Belkin's) but just leave that attached to your favorite headphones and at least it looks pretty good.

If you are frustrated that your sweet High End headphones don't work in the iPhone's jack, go out to Radio Shack and get a 12 inch long 3.5mm (1/8th inch) stereo jack cable that has the in line volume control - I bought mine a while ago but they can't be more than 5-10 bucks. Shave off just enough of the black plastic at the male end (that goes into your headphone jack) to make it fit, and voila - you have an adapter that sounds great, has a built in volume adjustment so you can leave your iPhone in your pocket, it's cheap, and you don't have to cut up your actual headphones, possibly voiding their warranty.

Ugly, especially with the rigid plastic. Griffin's solution looks better.
As to the suggestions to use parts with inline volume control, that adds another source of distortion to your fancy audiophile headphones.

Okay, Phototravel, you are BRILLIANT. I just went to the local Radio Shack after going to their web site - you can check if products are in stock at your local store via the Web. I found out online that the product is Model: 42-2559, "Colume Control headphone extension cord". It's $7.99, small as can be (which is great). Got it home, was scared to death to cut into it, did it anyway with a pair of box cutters. They cut the black rubber very easily. You need to cut only a thin sliver of the rubber off, but you need to cut into the base of the rubber, not just the thin rim that touches the metal. But seriously, just cut a think sliver, and try it. If it doesn't work yet, cut a tiny bit more. Mine worked the first time. And when you cut the rubber, so long as you don't go far down, you're only cutting rubber, there's nothing electronic for you to hit (and the things are only 8 bucks). It works PERFECTLY and isn't hideous at all, unlock the belkin one - and you get the volume control. Thank you thank you thank you for this tip.

Well... If you have ever used a soldering soldering iron before, you can make your own iPhone adapter and make it much better.
If you have any old iPod earphone that you don't use, you will notice that this old earphone fits the iPhone... so... if you solder it to the other end of an earphone extension, you will have your own custom made iPhone adapter....

CAUTION: I followed Mr. Horwitz's advice and bought the Smartshare. It didn't fit. That isn't because of error on my end- I later went to the Apple store and bought the Belkin adapter and that fit perfectly well.
It looks like you all came up with better solutions anyway, but I just wanted to caution anyone reading this article against buying the Smartshare.

As noted, the SmartShare one needs to buy is the one with the included Griffin Headphone Adapter for iPhone, not just the standard version.

The old iPod Shuffle sport case came with an adapter that is much smaller and less bulky. You can pick one of these older cases up on eBay for about $5 shipped. I picked up two so I can just have these dongles everywhere.

I have some simple sony headphones (over the ear style) that I use for running - those apple earbuds just fall out. Of course the Sonys dind't fit the iphone, but after 90 seconds with a utility knife to shave down the outer plastic around the tip, it fit right it. Problem solved, no money spent!
