If you have any 40GB iPod photo, you're one of the people affected by the warning we put in the review:

"Due to undisclosed change to new iPod photo hardware, doesn’t fully work with first-generation iPod photo units."

If you have a 60GB iPod photo purchased in or prior to February, 2005, you're in this boat, too. 30GB iPod photos won't have the problem, as they're second-generation. It's an Apple issue, not a Griffin issue, and affects more than just AirClick - it has the same problem with RemoteRemote 2 and iJet, though iJet has stronger broadcasting power to begin with.

I've been using my Air Click remote for about a week now at work and here are some of my observations: like dogman45 and wademac, I too had issues with distance and location of my iPod. I keep my iPod in my right front jeans pocket and clip the remote to my left pocket (me being a south paw). I had a hard time getting the reciever to consistantly accept the commands, so I moved the remote to my right pocket closer to the iPod and it worked fine. I also agree that the clip is rather flimsy. I work standing up most of the day and had to constanly check to make sure it wouldn't fall off. It is a very nice touch though, and with the included velcro clip holder it is very easy to take it from work to the car at the end of the day.

Some observations on the AirClick receiver: two things that really stand out for me about this receiver are that the headphone jack is logically placed at the top and the L.E.D. on the front that acknowledges remote commands is a nice touch. And it doesn't feels as flimsy as the Remote Remote's receiver which came apart after only a few week's use.

Bottom line is for the money, I think the AirClick is a fine remote. Much better in my opinion than Engineered Audio's Remote Remote. You get much more for the same price with the AirClick

Anyone else have problems when plugging the AirClick to an auxiliary line of a home stereo? The remote doesn't work at all for me then, whereas it seems to work OK otherwise (for instance, if I unplug it and keep the iPod near the stereo), albeit with some distance problems. It's generally fine in my car and walking around with earbuds. I'm thinking perhaps there's some RF interference from the stereo, which is a drag.

Just got my Airclick USB & so far I'm seriously underwhelmed. It works for about 5-10 songs, then, despite the fact the receiver indicates it is getting the button presses from the remote, it will no longer control itunes. The only thing that will (sometimes) bring it back, is unplugging the rcvr from the usb port & plugging it back in.

I've tried a number of USB ports on my system, (mainboard, hub etc) nothing seems to help.

If the device would work reliably, I think it would be a good value. As it stands, I wouldn't recommend this unit to anyone yet.

To be fair, I'll follow up with Grif. tech support, but inital impressions are not good.

If they can't sort it out for me, it's going back.

the lesson here:

NEVER buy 1st generation of anything!
ipod photo 1st gen=bad
airclick 1st gen=bad

what scares me is that i ve read a couple of "professional" reviews from this and other remotes (and many accesories) and they say it is a good product but when you read the user comments everyone complains.

hmmm, weird isn't it?

i think all sites should allow for users to post their product rating (e.g. http://www.cnet.com). as a rule user comments tend to be much more accurate than what spoiled reviewers say.
is it maybe because they get the stuff for free? i hope u take this as a constructive criticism, i love ipodlounge

I also own a 1st gen ipod Photo and it is real disapointing to hear accessories not compatible with my iPod when my iPod isnt even 6 months old.
The one thing I been wanting to look for is a remote that I can attach to my steering wheel (like the AirClick w/out the flaws) so i can change tracks while I drive.
I have a pioneer stereo and one suggestion I do have for iPodlounge is you should also consider doing reviews for iPod stereo connectors. I mean stereo iPod connectors are ipod docks for cars and I, for one, would like to see what iPodlounge staff and users feel about the functionality of the pioneer iPod Dock for cars.

Air Click - Biggest waste of money. I am lucky to get 2 feet and half the time it does not even work. Both Griffin and the reviewer should explain how they got theirs to work. I cannot be any unhappier with both.

Does anyone know how well it works with the 4G Ipod?

Add another disatisfied Airclick USB customer! Just got mine yesterday- has a grand range of 4 feet! Not plugged into any hub- directely into my G5- How can they claim a range of 60 feet? Left email at griffin but havent heard back.

I got mine yesterday. I haven't tested the range otherwise, but it works fine in the car with the remote attached to the steering wheel and the iPod in the glovebox.

So, is that on the 4th generation Ipod? If it is then how good does it work when charging and/or playing music on the dock?

Posted by greatmilenko04 on May 8, 2005 at 8:48 PM (PDT)

Sorry. Yes, it's a 4th generation. I haven't tested it while charging or docked. I got it and immediately set up the Airclick in the glovebox/steering wheel. (I routed an auxiliary in from my stereo into the glovebox from behind. The only evidence of something going on is the remote on the wheel spoke.)

Works great. To turn off the iPod you just hold down play (on the remote, of course) for a couple of seconds; to turn it back on, just press play and it resumes where you left off almost instantly.

I haven't had any of the problems described above, and since I'm a 40GB photo owner, it sounds like I should have. Here's what works and some little caviats:

- in the car. Works, but on occasion it doesn't catch the signal. I have my iPod mounted in a cupholder under my dash, so it might be having issues passing signal through all the electronics in the central dash. A slight repositioning of the remote lower on my steering wheel solved the problem.

- iPod photo TV output. Even though the AirClick uses the "long" 3-ring headphone plug, you cannot plug the video cable into the airclick... video simply doesn't come out. But, if you use the photo dock and utilize the little hold switch trick (switch hold on, press down play and switch hold off) it works! No problems. FF and RR switch pictures and you can pause the slideshow with the play / pause button. Volume affects music if it is playing.

- signal strength. On occasion it doesn't catch a signal. Typical RF interference I would assume. Just point the remote straight up and down or hold it to your chin (seriously) will usually make it work if you are a long distance away. Also, stand your ipod up (dock?) if possible.

In the house the range is less than usable.
At the direction of Griffin ,I tried the remote outside and it only worked up to ten feet away DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT !
At twenty feet away, in full view of it ,
NOTHING. Don't waste your money unless you want to use it 2 foot away or less , like in your car. It's being returned today. Yes, I checked the battery !

Just bought one for my mini - primary use in the car. Absolutely perfectly working - just does 100% the job I wanted it to do. Can 100% recommend it for users that are happy with the shuffle song feature when driving.

I have had no problems with the Airclick Mini. I use it primarily at home with my Mini hooked up to my stereo. I can use it from another room (roughly 20-30 feet and through walls) with no problems.

I would like one of these or something similar. but I am really not interested in removing (or dremelling out the top of) my Contour Showcase in order to do so. Considering how many top-mount accessories there are (FM transmitters; microphones; tiny speakers; etc), and considering that all of these accessories are meant to be used when your iPod is somewhere other than safely in your pocket, isn't it about time somebody came out with some sort of solution? What I'm envisioning (but have no way to make, alas) is a small headphone/data connector extension that fits into the top access hole of a case and gives you the clearance needed to attach top-mount accessories, sort of like a Pocket Dock for the other end of the iPod. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I would buy one in an instant.
