I had a similar problem with random pausing with DLO's Transpod FM for the shuffle. It seemed the problem was with their shuffle dock connector being loose, and vibration in the car would cause the connection to the smaller wires in-between the USB wires to come and go. Since those are directly connected to the shuffle's headphone connections, then the shuffle thinks you are unplugging the headphones and pauses the playback.

"Apple’s iPod Camera Connector won’t work either, for obvious reasons".
You can't see photos on a shuffle, but have you tested if Camera Connector works for transfering photos?
I would like to be able to flush photos from my camera to my iPod shuffle and move them to my PC later.
