I'll ask again, like I did for the ROKR, does it handle auto updating smart playlists? Does it save you place in audio books? I have mp3 based audio books broken into 10 minute sections. I put them in a smart playlist that only contains mp3 with a genres of ebook and a playcount of 0. My ipod handles this fine, will the phone?

For the most part, I have to agree with the article. I've had the phone for about 9 days now and am very happy with it so far. I would give it a solid B+ as a pure mobile phone. If you're really trying to take the iTunes and music capabilities into consideration, I agree with the B- rating, although these features weren't really important to me - I just needed a new phone. The timing was good and an additonal Cingular "loyalty" discount of $50 brought this price down to $149 for me.

I posted some of my experiences with it here:

I must respectfully disagree with you on assessment of this product. I purchased one and have been thrilled to be able to have my Itunes on the phone.

It does all the "phone" things as well as any other cell phone I have seen. Plus, you get music in the same format as your Ipod.

Some of the points you made about especially about the "hang" while starting a song, I have that on my Ipod. You say the interface should be improved, I am sure it will. Remember it's a phone.

My 1 complaint is the crappy earphones they supply. I think they know the earphones are crap which is why they give the adapter to able to use your own.

I was going to go the cheap phone and Shuffle route but after testing it out, this setup is better, due to only having one device to carry and it sounds just a good as a shuffle will.

Plus, with Bluetooth I was easily able to sync my contact list using Isync.

I think you may have been a little harsh in your review, remember it's a phone first music player second.

I rate product this a B+/A-

If the SLVR gets a B-, it's because the w800i gets an A. Anyone with an extensive purchased iTunes libary or anyone concerned with looks alone should not buy one. However if you do not meet those criteria and you're looking for a phone that outdoes the SLVR in every other category, GET ONE NOW. You should also note that while the SLVR can sync with your mac using iSync, so can the w800i, but as listed on Apple.com, you can sync contacts, calendar events, and to do items. And Sony provides a plethora of ipod-esque accessories like portable speakers, fm transmitters and the like. And...um... the sony has an LED flash on it good for blinding ninjas, but it won't matter because those ninjas are using w800s as well. Ninjas are are sweet.

Also check the CNET review: http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_Ericsson_W800i/4505-6454_7-31313352-2.html?tag=sub

In conclusion, the SLVR is a phone deserving of a B-, try out the Sony w800i or w810i and you'll know why.

You guys can stop complaining about the price. Wal-Mart is selling them for $100 with a new 2-year agreement. ($135 to upgrade.) Soon enough it'll be free just like the RAZR.

I got it because -- *gasp* -- I prefer bar phones, otherwise I would have gone with the RAZR. iTunes is a nice extra, but if that's what I was really looking for, I'd buy an iPod.

redruM: I'm not entirely sure what you mean about the smart playlists. I know it does keep a play count and you can autofill from a smart playlist, like a shuffle. As for your other question, the phone only seems to remember your position in a file so long as the iTunes client is active. You can keep the client active on the main screen, but if the phone goes off you'll probably lose your spot.

I bought a MotoSLVR L7 and then returned it to get the SE W810i. It was the 100 song limit on the SLVR, better camera on the W810 and the fact that the SLVR could not use songs as ring tones that got me to switch.

Now I'm thinking I made a mistake:

The software for the W810 is pretty crap (PC2phone). I was able to use itunes on the SLVR with not problems. The SE W810i is not as user friendly as the Moto SLVR - but I 'm used to using Moto so that is my bias.

Well, I've abandoned my k750i for a RAZR v3im. Even with the enforced conversion of ripped files to 128 kbps AAC, the sound quality puts the Sony Ericsson - and all iPods bar the shuffle - to shame. Yeah, the transfer's slow, but who cares? You can receive calls while it's connected and it automatically changes the ring tone style to "loud". It's got an "aeroplane" mode, unlike the k750. The camera's only 1.2 mpixel rather than 2 mpixel but I use a "proper" digital camera anyway. Oh, and the k750 doesn't have a flash - it's a torch light, nowhere near the intensity needed for flash photography. The RAZR v3im is a very good product and deserves to do well. Even like the dark maroon colour.
