Altec IM7's beat the HI-FI and the Bose. They are the best I have ever owned...

I just got the IM7 today from Amazon for $180 shipped and they are quite good. I'm used to listening to music through my Etymotic earphones so I kind of have an idea of what good sounds are. The bass design is pretty impressive even at low levels. It's 2am and I'm listening to David Gray and they highs and lows are quite clear at this low of a level. Oh and I got my 13" MacBook today too. Woot!

After reading the review, I was curious. I was fortunate enough to spend some time listening to the iThunder. IMO, nice! Music sounded good at nearly all levels, though as with almost all boombox style players, there is some distortion at higher volume levels. I also like the old school look, clean lines and carrying handle. Reminds me of portable 8-track (yes, 8-track, remember those) player I once owned! And my kids think its cool too...

I have the iLuv boombox and am very pleased. I am not an audiophile by any means, but I do like my music. I was really surprised at how crisp and clear it does sound. The box is great, and it's the only one that charges the iPod while running on batteries, so it's going to be great for camping and outdoors.

IM7...ugh. Couldn't STAND the way that jelly roll log sounded. At least it's gotten cheaper ($162 from amazon's preferred partner seller), if that counts for anything.

Since I'm already personally retro anyways, I'd be curious to listen to just how inferior the MTX really sounds. I've never been much of an MTX-brand proponent in the past; for the longest time their mobile audio gear was definite bargain-basement drivel, but lately they've sought to improve things. For now I'll give them props for the integrated handle, though. We'll see about the most important aspect--SQ--later on, when I get one in my grubby little mitts. I only wish they didn't mimick the iPod's finish sheen (at least that's what it looks like from the pics); what's wrong with flat finishes?

As for the iLuv (what a nauseating name) i552 portable, how in blazes does it keep an iPod securely in place? I mean, if you lug the thing around as a boombox (carrying it around--which is the WHOLE point of the boombox as I understand the genotype), aside from the contour of the dock insert an iPod doesn't seem to be held down at all, if the pics on iLuv's website are any indicator. Seems like an excellent way to bollocks up the precious little DAP.

Not sure how you could think the im7 sounds so bad. You must have tried a defective one or something. I dont see how anyone could not find that thing to sound remarkable for its size.

I just got my iThunder (for $150) and it's amesome! It sounds better than any of the other ones I've heard (including the iM7 that I had before). You have to let the speakers warm up for a couple songs when you first take it out of the box but after that you can crank it so loud and it still sounds good. I love the old skool design too...
