PodGear PocketParty Portable Speaker System | iLounge

Anyone know if this (or the PodWave etc.) can still generate sound with the battery removed, using only the iPod's own output? How's the volume?

I have a set of speakers that works that way--no battery--and is surprisingly loud. That makes them perfect as an iPod alarm clock, and some iPods (like my Photo) do have battery life to spare.

Leaving battery-powered speakers on all night does not make a good alarm clock. But if these generate a useful volume with no battery installed, I can ditch the other speakers I have. They're too bulky with a mess of wires. (Cheap speakers that came with my cheap PC.)

TIA

Nagromme- The Podwave speakers by Macally do not work with the battery removed. I assume that the PodGear speakers are the same. I would sacrifice having to buy a battery for how ultra-portable they are. I used to use my podwave as an alarm clock and it worked well, but I like using my cell phone better. wink

Cool--thanks. Good to know the battery doesn't totally drain if left on all night. But I think I'll keep watching for future options.

What if you take it in a car? Can you hear the speakers over the noise from driveing on the freeway? We want to find a way to listen to the ipod on a bus.

"We want to find a way to listen to the ipod on a bus."

That's a great idea, everyone on the bus must heard your music.

uggghhhh! Keep your music to your self when your in a public place like a bus!

Best bus solutions:

a) Splitter and multiple pairs of headphones.

or

b) FM transmitter and headphones with radios built-in. Less quality but not bad--and no wires!

Maybe you could use an FM transmitter and ask the bus driver to turn the radio on and to the station you have programmed. You may need to ask some of the pregnant or elderly women sitting up front to vacate their seat so that you can sit close enought to broadcast. They probably won't mind in that you are providing the entire bus with your music free of charge.

Recently bought the Macally for $25 and for the price it's a good buy! it's ideal for two people in an intimate setting but for high end sound there are better solutions.

I bought a PodWave a few months ago (the original smaller one) and have never been close to happy with the sound. I love the portability and enjoy it for listening to audio books but music sounds pretty bad with lots of rattle, even at lower volumes. Last week I was fortunate enough to be in London and decided to pick up a PocketParty. To MY ears there's a huge difference between the two! I actually enjoy listening to music with the PocketParty, there's nary a rattle or hint of distortion, even with the volume all the way up. Your mileage may vary but for me it's well worth the extra price. Granted it ain't Polk speakers but it's at least as good as a small portable radio AND it fits in my pocket! It's also nice that it doesn't swing around like the PodWave does...but...you will need an extension cable to use it on your laptop because the little plastic thingie will keep it from seating properly on other than the 3G or 4G ipod.
