Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphones | iLounge

Well, an even bigger shock is that the SE420 has slightly inferior sound to the SE210?! I have both here right now and if I had to pick one, it would be the cheaper 210. The vocal presentation is clearer and more upfront - and the bass is exactly the same as on the 420.

I am really disappointed with Shures 'new improved' offerings. When I read on iLounge that the 210 was virtually indistinguishable from the 310, I was positive the 420 would beat both of them hands down (not tried the 310, and I can see now there is no point). So I borrowed the 210's from a friend, and bought the 420s (now on eBay at a loss), and couldn't believe my ears. Yes, I know how to get a good seal, I've had the E4, E3 etc so I know how to insert them - what I'm saying is that the 420 sounds OK, but it does NOT sound better than the much cheaper (but still overpriced) SE210. For anyone who's thinking of buying the 420, I'd strongly suggest buying the 210 at half the price, you will not hear any perceptible differences other than the vocals are less muted with the 210s.

All in all, I feel cheated by Shure, and will wait till the 420 is more widely available so I can read other people's views on them also. I will also e-mail Shure just to let them know how teed off I am that they seem to have bought out the 210, 310 and 420 at extortionate prices, with the sound quality virtually being the same on all of them.

Yes - if you buy the 420s without trying the 210s, you wouldn't be disappointed - but if you compared the 210s to the 420s, you'd be really disappointed and confused, and I can almost guarantee you'd prefer the 210.

I went out and purchased a pair of SE210s and SE310s and disagree with them being "virtually indistinguishable". I spent some time comparing both headphones and could immediately tell that there was a difference between the two. The SE310s provide much more clarity than the SE210s. The sound isn't as much in your face and actually separates out the detail of the music and vocals. I ended up returning my SE210s and keeping the SE310s.
