yeah, i was waiting for a sign of these on ilounge. please test them and tell us what you thing. i could get the er 6i for roughly the same price, but that would be over ebay from a foreign seller. these sonys are available in pretty much any store i go to here in germany, so that would make things a lot easier...

Well, I've got er6i, e3c and e4c and I strongly prefer these Sonys. Agree with the point about isolation, though - the only reason I retain the Shures for airline travel. Incidentally, I paid £30 new for mine from a UK eBay shop - which puts a different slant again on the value proposition against £150 Shures (anything American is very expensive outside the US).

How is the plastic on the cords? I have the white MDR-81s and the plastic does not stand up very well to travel especially and chafes off and exposes the copper wires after a couple of months.

Just an FYI here. For these earphones to technically be in the "middle ear", they'd have to perform a slight myringotomy each time you put them in as the middle ear is actually behind the eardrum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_ear).
On the other hand, if that's indeed what these do, then that is awesome and disturbing.

I bought a set in December and I love them. At first I thought they were lacking in the mid range area compared to my MDRE888's but after tweaking the audio properties through iTunes a little they rock. They don't totally block outside sound but I don't normally want to be that isolated from my sourroundings. I've never liked Sony's cord design, but I made it work.

I have both the EX71s and 81's I have always liked their warm, base-heavy sound and found myself usign the 71's constantly, hence fraying several pairs due to the crap cable. I also have a set of Shure e4c that I have always founf lacked in the base dept. I listen to a huge variety of music leaning towards indy, electronica, classic rock than pop.

Just picked up a set of these today and I am impressed. They definately outperform the 71/81s in terms of allowing for more detail and the base, while sill there, is more controlled. Definately worth the €65 i paid for them,
