iLuv's FlightFit Gaudi for iPhone 5/5s ($25, aka AI5FLIG) is the latest case to combine hard polycarbonate plastic and a soft TPU lining, in what seems to be a common trend recently. This one is inspired by the famous Spanish architect, with a unique raised pattern and glow in the dark design. It's available with either black or white plastic, and green or blue rubber inserts, respectively.

The inner rubber layer of the case fits snugly around the body of the iPhone. Although it’s clearly designed to be only a part rather than the whole solution, it actually offers enough coverage that it could be used on its own. This includes button protection along the edges, and a raised lip around the screen. Instead of separate holes for the ports along the bottom edge, iLuv went with a single opening running from the headphone port to the speaker. This offers the advantage of greater docking and accessory compatibility, but results in a slightly reduced quantity of protection.

Snapping the plastic frame over the rubber completes the case. While the extra layer does add some protection, it’s the aesthetics that really stick out. Oval-shaped openings perfectly match raised shapes in the rubber, and the ebbing and flowing design is overall very pleasant—one of the nicest-looking cases we’ve seen from iLuv.

Functionally, FlightFit Gaudi is a perfectly fine case—not terribly exciting—yet the design elements really make it something worth checking out. Not everyone will necessarily love the look, but even those who don’t want it for themselves will likely appreciate the distinctive styling. It deserves our strong general recommendation.
