When we first came across uNu’s DX Protective Battery Case for iPhone 5 ($80) at the 2013 CES, we commented that it looked quite similar to Lenmar’s Meridian, although we didn’t place the two side by side to directly compare them. Now that we’ve done that, we can say with certainty that they’re the same case. With two cosmetic small exceptions — the logos, and the alignment of the power button and indicator light — the 2300mAh battery packs are indistinguishable from one another.
Please see our previous review for all the details on the case itself.
We did run a battery test with DX to ensure there were no differences in battery performance between the two cases. In our testing of Meridian, it was able to provide a 99% recharge to a fully depleted iPhone 5. Under the same conditions, DX actually provided 105%.
Although somewhat higher, the results are certainly in the same ballpark; it’s impossible to tell if there is more advanced circuitry, or the conditions were just a bit different. Either way, for $10 less, there’s no reason not to take this model over Meridian’s. It’s available at the lowest price for the highest capacity, and therefore earns our A- rating—even though it’s not an original design.
