Westone's UM1 and UM2 earphones are amongst the best we've heard in the single- and double-driver categories. Now the company is planning to release Westone 3 ($400), a "three-way driver" earphone that the company claims uses drivers that are specifically dedicated to lows, mids, and highs respectively, unlike "triple-driver" solutions with two bass drivers and a high-end driver. That said, our prototype Westone 3 -- the black version below, which will apparently look more like the silver version for final models -- skews very warm and bass heavy, though this could change by the release of the final version in May 2007. Size-wise, they're comparable to Shure's E500/SE530 triple-driver earphones, with similar curves. A case, multiple ear tips, and headphone plug adapter will be included, and an in-line volume control is also planned.
