If you’ve had your iPhone for very long, odds are you’ve noticed that it isn’t shy about reminding you that you’ve got an incoming text or MMS message that you haven’t gotten around to looking at—a problem that can sometimes lead to you thinking you have more messages than you really have. There’s a simple way to take control of this potentially aggravating feature, however. Open up the Settings app, tap on Messages, and then tap on Play Alert Tone. From here, you can bring the number of times it will alert you down to once or twice, or crank things up ‘til it’s going off 10 times for each text, or enough to make you sound like the most popular person in the room.

Interestingly, my VZW iPhone 4 does not have this.  Only shows “Repeat Alert” as an on/off option.  Below in smaller type, advises that it will alert 2 more times if ignored.

Is this something new? I’m running iOS 4.2.8, which I believe is the latest version for the VZW model.

#1,

It’s possible - the feature was tested using an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3.3.

Correct.  The feature was introduced in iOS 4.3.

OK, I see. 4.3 is not available for CDMA iPhones, which is why I don’t have this option.

Darn. My secret of looking popular is out. Hope no one at the club reads this.

Now if we could only use custom txt tones so everyone in the office doesn’t have to pull their phone out of pocket whenever a message comes in. I’m tired of being stuck with limited txt tones.

#6: Just pick the most annoying one (Choo Choo?), then you can say “Yep, that’s me!”
