Income is getting harder to earn online. Yet there are ways you can still make money in your spare time.

The internet is full of get-rich-quick schemes, and many of them are all hot air. Once, it may have well been possible to stuff your wallet in record time with these schemes. Yet in a world where 57.5% of all internet traffic is bot-based, and with stiff competition, this is increasingly unlikely. For those who set achievable goals, it is quite easy to earn income in smaller amounts, and it can take up less time than many people think.

The Shift to Home-Based Income Streams

After 2020, many people began to shift to home working. For some, this just meant performing the same task with the same company, but with more days out of the office. Other people began to set up businesses based at home, swelling the level of competition and people wanting more flexible employment arrangements.

Since then, other changes have made competition even more fierce. Concepts like dropshipping have high ad costs, and competition for them has grown ever more fierce. Even those writing content have been squeezed due to the use of generative AI. For those who want to supplement an income or earn a little more, chances are still there. Many people choose to take surveys for gift cards, which allow them to purchase items from various stores and retailers. Often short, they can be fit into extra time in the day between other commitments.

Other opportunities tend to focus around AI content. This is either fact-checking it, making it more human, or personalising it. Selling in niche verticals has also become more popular for those who are able to build communities. Thus, the key is personalization and humanization, performing those tasks computers can not.

High Visibility Opportunities

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 35% of workers in the US did at least some tasks remotely in 2025. Workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher were more likely to work from home, as were women.

For those wanting to earn their income solely from remote opportunities, there are still some high-visibility pathways. Despite being hard work, the creator economy is one that does well. Short-form content is now at a point where it is not a fad, but a sustainable form of entertainment that can pay.

Thus, people pursuing this do need to realise it is a long-term plan. Only a few accounts go ‘viral’ and push their social presence hugely in a short space of time. Viral content can’t be made or replicated, and it is essentially lightning in a bottle. Thus, it takes time and must involve the consistent creation of short-form content on a designated niche.

Another path is micro freelancing. As many businesses now prefer to hire from the gig economy instead of onboarding full-time staff, specialized part-time staff can do really well. People may do bookkeeping, or even set up search engine optimization or websites. Even those without formal training can partake in this, using the aforementioned surveys from home. This is a form of micro freelancing, providing information that only specific demographics can give.

Assessing Your Capabilities

Those who are starting out need to think about their own skills and experience, instead of choosing a vertical they believe is lucrative that may not suit them. They must begin by considering the skills and experience they already have. It may be something they already do at work, like IT or marketing, or it could be something they also do as a hobby, such as a creative pursuit.

All of these activities take time, and it will be a slog building a business and audience. Those who don’t have this time may want to consider platforms that are quicker to onboard and earn, such as the aforementioned survey sites. While they may not make millions, they can be extremely useful and convenient.

For the first few months, focus on building proof. This does not mean working for free, but it does involve gaining testimonials and examples of work. At first, this may involve accepting commissions at a slightly lower fee than they would normally take. Generic bidding for work on sites should be avoided, and the person should instead focus on niche audiences, expanding their own network.

Thus, making money online is no longer a get-rich-quick scheme. If you want a quick supplementary source of cash, then consider surveys to boost your income. They are easy, and while you will be paid in vouchers, they are often ones that can be used for groceries and entertainment, helping to alleviate some costs.

Anyone looking for a career needs to have a long-term plan. They must use their skills and build a niche. From here, they can slowly scale up, bringing on more clients and expanding at their own pace.
