While Apple’s recently introduced AirPods wireless earbuds will come with a charging case, there’s certainly nothing new about that concept in general. MyCharge has introduced its own charging case for wireless earbuds, PowerGear Sound ($40). While the case will work with any smaller-sized earbuds which recharge using a micro-USB cable, PowerGear Sound specifically includes a tray designed to fit Beats’ PowerBeats earbuds.
The hard carrying case contains a 1000 mAh battery that should charge PowerBeats up to 10 times — we’re guessing the case will deliver comparable performance to similarly sized earbuds.
PowerGear Sound measures roughly 4.3” x 3.6” x 1.75”. It has a soft touch plastic black exterior and a hard red silicone interior. The PowerBeats tray comes already installed, but it can be easily removed to more adequately accommodate other wireless earbuds — as pictured, we recharged Scosche’s SportclipAIR.
We encountered no issues, and when charging was finished, we inserted the small built-in micro-USB cable back into its proper place in the case. A small button on the outside of the case reveals PowerGear Sound’s remaining battery power, and the case also comes with a short micro-USB cable for recharging — a flap on the left side of the case covers the charging port.
