We’ve enjoyed using Spotify on the Macs since it launched—the ability to listen to virtually anything has introduced us to all kinds of new music. The only downside apart from the annoyingly cheesy ads is the lack of a mini player. Apple’s had one for years in iTunes, but the folks at Spotify haven’t seemed to figure it out yet. Luckily, third party developers such as David Johnson have arrived to fill the gap, so we have SpotRemote for Spotify ($2).

SpotRemote for Spotify is an extremely simple Mac App Store title that lives in your menu bar. When Spotify is open and you have something playing, you can click on the icon to see the track information and album art. You’re also presented with track and volume controls. The app’s only setting allows you to set it to automatically launch and close with Spotify. Is it extremely simple? Sure. But if you’re getting a lot of use out of the service, the $2 asking price will quickly prove to be worth it.
