Following last year’s release of HomeKit support for its Tradfri smart lights, it appears that Ikea is now looking to expand the lineup with a HomeKit smart plug later this year. A new report from the Swedish news site Teknikveckan 1 (via 9to5Mac) discovered an entry in what appears to be Ikea’s internal product database that mentions a new smart plug.
While the design appears to be similar to most other smart plugs we’ve seen — after all, there’s only so much you can do with a smart plug — Ikea’s distinguishing factor could very well be pricing, with the report claiming that the Tradfri smart plug will sell for only $10 — a third of the price of competing smart plugs — with the company also offering a $15 bundle that will include a remote. The new smart plug is supposed to be available in October, although there’s no word on which countries it will be released in.
