“Apple stands firm against entertainment cartel”
Dan Gillmor, Mercury News Technology Columnist writes in a recent article about how Apple is not taking the mainstream approach to locking out individual freedoms, and allowing it’s users to choose how they use their digital media.
“The era of Digital Rights Management, commonly called DRM, is swiftly moving closer, thanks to the Intels and AMDs and Microsofts. They’re busy selling and creating the tools that give copyright holders the ability to tell users of copyrighted material—customers, scholars, libraries, etc.—precisely how they may use it. DRM, in the most typical use of the expression, is about owners’ rights. It would be more accurate to call DRM, in that context, ‘Digital Restrictions Management.’”
Mac: iPod2iTunes 1.7b5 Released
“Within iTunes or the Finder it is not possible to transfer tracks or playlists from your iPod to your Mac(s). iPod2iTunes (i2i) is the only utility which allows you not only to copy but to synchronize tracks + playlists from your iPod(s) to your Mac(s). All within iTunes. The synchronization ensures that you don’t produce duplicate MP3 files on your disk as it is easily the case if you just copy files from the iPod via other methods.”
- What’s new in v1.7b5:
- Playlist synchronization does now consider smart playlists on the iPod. Since it is not possible for iPod2iTunes to create smart playlists in iTunes, common playlists are created instead.
- If iTunes was not running and iPod2iTunes was started with a non-linked iPod attached, iPod2iTunes hung for a minute and then it statet that the iPod is not visible in iTunes.
- Lots of small changes in the interface.
- Compatible with iPod firmware 1.2.1.
- Other improvements and corrections.

Windows: iAppoint 0.3 Released
“With iAppoint you can store all your appointments from Windows Outlook 2000 or XP to your iPod’s Calendar. All appointments are stored into one file called vCalendar.ics which is stored on your local folder c:
This file can be copied to your iPod’s calendar folder with tools like XPlay, Macopener or Macdrive.
Others are using the program to sync iCal on the Mac with Win Outlook data!
This version includes recurring appointments and speed improvements.I am working on a single file export of all contacts too.
The program is called iPerson and will be released later this month.”

Linux: SyncPOD 0.64 Released
“This script syncs a local directory with your iPod. If the directory is larger than the space on your iPod you can sync this larger directory with a master playlist. As alternative you can sync just a bunch of playlists.”

Local Newspaper Gives iPod a Bad Rap
[Update 10|05|02 7:53 PM PST] Darek Fanton, author of the Portsmouth Hearld posted a correction and several of the 93 emails he received regarding the erroneous caption accompanying the iPod photo.
[Update 10|05|02] The photo and caption have been removed from the Portsmouth Herald article. A screenshot of the original article is available.
MacObserver reports that a Portsmouth Herald editor has bungled an article trying to explain peer-to-peer file sharing and downloading music from the internet. It’s obvious the author is not well-informed, because a photo of the iPod is seen on the webpage with the caption, “Apple’s iPod is just one of the many ways to download music from the Internet.” This is obviously false, because any informed person knows that the iPod only plays MP3s and cannot directly download music files from the internet.
