Case Scenario’s Pantone Universe case for iPhone 5c ($25) is built for more than just design fans — unlike prior Pantone shells, this is a full case and a nice option in its own right. As has proved to be popular with early iPhone 5c cases, it combines a clear plastic back with a rubber bumper, much like Griffin’s Reveal and others. Five border colors are available, matching the five shades of iPhone 5c.
Along the bottom of the backplate is a white strip and the Pantone Universe logo, making the handset look like a color sample.
It’s easy to install and remove Pantone Universe, thanks to the flexible rubber frame, which rises above the display a small amount. Instead of being a completely smooth curve, like Reveal is, the center of the rubber is slightly raised above the edges.
As has been the case with a number of early iPhone 5c cases, that tactility of the Sleep/Wake button is slightly lessened, but the volume buttons feel quite clicky. The port openings on the bottom are large enough to accommodate third party accessories, only docks that are specifically designed to accept cases will work. As for the back panel, it’ll show any trapped dust and the like, so you’ll want to wipe down your iPhone before installation.
