Review: Incipio Octane Pure, Phenom + Tension Block for iPhone 6/6s

By Phil DzikiyMay 19, 2021 9:33 pm UTC

Three Incipio cases for iPhone 6s all offer good protection at affordable prices. Octane Pure ($30) is a thin, translucent co-molded polycarbonate case. Phenom ($35) is also a polycarbonate/TPU case, but it’s bulkier and adds a bit more protection. Tension Block ($20) is a single-layer, flexible TPU case. All cases feature button coverage for the sleep/wake button and volume controls. All three cases come in a variety of colors.

Octane Pure is a straightforward co-molded case, best compared to Speck’s CandyShell Clear. Though this case isn’t quite as sturdy as Speck’s offering, it’s thinner, which some may prefer.

Phenom’s packaging bills the case as “the future of drop protection,” advertising “three layers of defense.” That third layer is a honeycomb-shaped TPE cushioning inside the case. There’s no doubt Phenom is a protective case, though some will like the soft-touch back more than others. We also weren’t crazy about the feel of the thick buttons.

Tension Block is even simpler than Octane Pure, though the TPU case has a notable pattern on the back top half. If you’re looking for an affordable case, it’s a good choice. All three of these cases are fine options, and they all earn our strong general recommendation.
