JAVOedge’s Austin Commuter Case for iPad 2 ($50) is designed for users who rely on their tablets while on the go. A folio-style case, the whole thing zips shut when not in use, with a handle along the spine that retracts when it’s not needed. Upon opening the zipper, you’ll find the kind of iPad-holding frame that’s all too common with this kind of design, with straight edges that don’t complement the iPad 2’s curved sides. A stylus holder’s in the middle, while the left side has a series of eight credit card slots. Those slots can also be used to prop up the iPad 2 in landscape orientation, as the frame pulls away from the cover. Austin Commuter Case is available in grey, purple, and earth colors.
There’s really nothing remarkable about Austin Commuter Case, but it’s not a bad option, either. Like the company’s Austin Flex Sleeve, we would have much preferred natural fabric to the texture-printed synthetic stuff that it uses. From a distance it actually looks pretty nice, but once you get up close, you realize it’s a cheap substitute. The extendable handle is the most standout feature for those who might want to carry an iPad in that way. Overall, this case is worthy of a limited recommendation; people who try it will be content, not thrilled, with what JAVOedge has come up with.
