It can be difficult to find truly affordable iPhone cases without sacrificing quality. Magpul, a maker of gun accessories, first came to our attention a few years back with its inexpensive Executive Field Case, which was followed by Field Case, both for iPhone 4/4S. The company has now taken this styling and extended it to the iPhone 5 and 5s, keeping the name Field Case ($13) for the new version.
It’s also worth noting that the case is made in America.
Almost identical to the prior version, the case is one piece of molded thermoplastic, with a slightly gritty texture and a raised grid pattern across the back. It’s available in 13 colors, ranging from earth tones to brighter primary colors, and including a translucent frost.
The material is thick enough to feel substantial without being bulky; in fact Field Case is actually a little thinner than a standard CandyShell. The ridges are a nice touch that, while they don’t necessary improve grip, do add some character to the case. Button protection is also done right, and unless you use the largest Lightning connectors, you shouldn’t run into any plug compatibility issues.
For the price, you’d be hard pressed to find a case that feels as well put together as Field Case.
