Sold in multiple color variations including the “midnight black” and “mystery black” versions shown here, HoverCoat ($60) is a 0.6mm-thick shell made from what MonCarbone says is a mix of a real carbon fiber back with composite materials, covering the iPhone 4’s sides and back, but not its top, bottom, or face, which lacks screen protection. HoverCoat’s midnight black version looks like a traditional weaved carbon fiber surface, while the glossy mystery black has a cool-looking clear plastic layer on top. Silver, gold, orange, blue, and pink versions are forthcoming. Updated: MonCarbone subsequently released Magnet-Force ($60), a version with a magnet on the back, which surprisingly doesn’t wreck the iPhone 4’s magnetometer/compass feature.
