While the idea of charging iPods, iPhones, and iPads using wall adapters is as old as the devices themselves, the concept of doing away with adapters in favor of USB cable-ready wall outlets is considerably newer — and Power2U ($30) by Newer Technology is a recent example of the technology. Built to fit the same footprint as any two-plug wall plate, Power2U includes twin grounded power ports as well as two USB ports that are covered by spring-loaded plastic doors by default.
Each of the USB ports supports up to 2 Amps of output, so iPads can be refueled at full speed, and special protective circuitry promises to provide only the energy needed, while only fueling the USB ports when they’re connected to cables. Newer Technology sells Power2U as a DIY installation kit with an instruction manual and very clear guidance as to which screws need to be connected to existing wires.
