RooCase’s Origami Case for iPad Air 2 ($50) is a sturdy matte polycarbonate case with a magnetic folding cover which acts as a multi-angle stand and also activates the iPad Air 2’s sleep/wake function. Like many cases for previous iPads, Origami leaves the buttons and ports open while protecting the rest of the case. The price is right, as Origami retails for $50, and it can also be found for significantly cheaper on a number of sites.

Origami keeps the iPad Air 2 secured in its shell with a snap, providing a small lip over the front of the device for a bit of added protection. While some may prefer a removable cover, many folio-style iPad cases don’t offer the functionality of Origami’s folding multi-angle stand cover. The cover works well as a stand, and the magnetic clasp activates the iPad Air 2 sleep/wake function without fail. No buttons are covered, and while that’s not entirely surprising, we would have liked to see a more precise cutout on the speaker grille instead of such a large opening.

Unfortunately, while the case feels sturdy, it also carries some added bulk and heft. To us, it appears like additional thickness was added to the back of the case for no real reason, detracting from the handheld appeal of the thin and light iPad Air 2.

Origami Case for iPad Air 2 is a good case at a very good price. It offers enough protection and functionality to be a worthy purchase for many users. However, the unnecessarily added bulk on the rear of the case can detract from the overall experience of using the svelte iPad Air 2. Origami earns our general recommendation.
