Some companies have released inexpensive portable speakers that are sold in pairs; others have tried single-driver speakers in the shapes of hockey pucks and boxes. Scosche’s new boomCan ($25) stuffs a 35mm driver inside a very small aluminum tube, making power and audio connections with a three-tipped cable: you charge the seven-hour rechargeable battery with full-sized and mini USB connectors, then push audio to it using a 3.5mm plug. The idea is to let users add additional boomCans on their own for extra sound; an audio output on the back lets you connect more speakers, and a toggle on the bottom lets you switch between monaural and stereo modes. Four different colors are available.
