Spigen has redesigned a number of its cases to fit Apple’s new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. We’ll first take a look at the company’s updated “Hybrid” cases — Neo Hybrid ($35), Neo Hybrid Carbon ($35), Neo Hybrid EX ($35), and Ultra Hybrid ($25). Neo Hybrid and its variations are basically a soft TPU case surrounded by a hard plastic bumper which keeps everything together. Ultra Hybrid is a simple, clear TPU case.
We found the original Neo Hybrid for iPhone 6 to be defective, but the 6s version has no such issues. When on the iPhone 6s, it’s a slim case that should offer a fair amount of protection. We’re still not crazy about the plastic buttons, which can pop out when trying to take the phone in and out of the case. But if you don’t take the case off, it won’t be a problem.
Neo Hybrid Carbon is basically the same as Neo Hybrid, but with a different, carbon fiber pattern. (There’s no actual carbon fiber in the case.) Neo Hybrid EX, seen below, is another variation — it pairs a clear back with the same plastic bumper.
Ultra Hybrid offers no bumper — it’s a one-piece TPU case. Interestingly, there are different versions of the case under the same name. Some versions have buttons which pop out, while a clear variation had the buttons built into the case. For some reason, Ultra Hybrid also comes with a protective film on the case, even though the case is shipped in plastic wrap within a box. We found this film both unnecessary and extremely annoying to remove.
All three versions of the Neo Hybrid case for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus provide adequate protection in a reasonably priced, slim profile, and they all earn our general recommendation. Though the one-piece Ultra Hybrid is $10 cheaper, make sure you get the exact version of the case you’re looking for — and prepare to set aside some time to remove that protective film before you use the case.
