Uniq’s Aircraft Clear ($27) for iPhone 6 is a case option consisting of an aluminum bumper that fits onto a thin, clear plastic shell. The aluminum bumper is lightweight and comes in a variety of colors, some of which match the iPhone 6 colors.
After the phone is inserted in the scratch-proof shell, the bumper is placed on — it may require a bit of effort to get it just right — to protect the sides. The plastic backing is scratch-proof, which is a nice change from a number of clear cases we’ve seen that become scratched fairly easily.
Coverage isn’t the main selling point of Aircraft Clear — the aluminum bumper covers the volume controls and sleep/wake button, and offers bottom port cutouts, but there’s really no lip to speak of on the front edges for screen protection.
The fit isn’t perfect either, as a thin layer of felt can be found inside the bumper — it may protect the device from the bumper, but it also tends to make the volume controls dip slightly inward. However, the bumper is aluminum, and once Aircraft Clear is on, it feels secure enough for a minimalist solution.
